Newbie ? What is a pingback?

The title is my question. I’m a newbie and I don’t know what a “pingback” is, although I am seeing them in my comment stream. I think they are a good thing, but not sure how I can use them to promote my blog or if I can do a pingback to help someone else’s blog. Can anybody explain it to me? Thanks!!

Pingbacks are automatically sent by WordPress.com blogs unless you choose to disable them in your settings.

Okay, they are sent automatically. But, how are they generated and what do they mean? Remember, you are talking to a newbie so don’t assume that I know anything!!

I’m just a regular user here, so I’m no expert on anything either. Anyway … a pingback is a good thing. It just means, essentially, that someone has linked to something on your blog page. Just as, when you link to someone else, they too receive a pingback. Nearly all bloggers love them, because it means your blog is getting read and that person is helping you to increase traffic. Very nice. Of course, this only works when both parties have pingback enabled blogs.
