Newbie/Appearance

I am brand new to blogging, have purchased my domain name and have my blog waiting to be loaded up and launched. I need a “look” for it. All the themes I choose come up with the message “not found. you are looking for something that is not here.” I need a simple (free) theme that will either have a photo of sky, ocean, beach, or allow me to import a photo I have. Can someone recommend an available theme? And tell me, do I choose the theme and then bring in my photo? How do I do that?

I am SO bewildered. Would happily download an e-book if someone can tell me which one is the most current, with up-to-date instruction? Thanks so much.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Try reading this: http://learn.wordpress.com

NOTHING in a book will be as up to date as the instructions you’ll receive in this forum. Start with that document.

All the themes you can choose are on your Dashboard under Appearance->Themes, but note that Premium Themes cost money to activate.

You’re welcome and good luck. Also remember: we can’t use themes you find somewhere else on the web, even if they say “WordPress” on them; those are for WordPress.ORG blogs. Only the ones on your dashboard.

I have 2 blogs (because I didn’t know what I was doing when I set it up), so there’s one I don’t plan to use, and one I do (Someone To Talk To @ someonetotalktotheblog.com). I happened to go onto the one I don’t plan to use (someonetotalktothebook.wordpress.com) and there’s this amazing photo of a beach with rocks, surf, etc. I don’t know how it got there. The page says the theme is twenty-eleven. But where do I get that photo, and how do I get it to the blog I plan to use? Maybe I’ll find the answers in the document you referred me to, which I’ve bookmarked and plan to follow, step-by-step.

That’s easy: you change themes! Change it to Twenty Eleven. That theme has an automatic selection of headers. You can also add your own through the Custom Header upload:

I noticed when I went back to that blog I don’t plan to use, the picture had changed. So after I choose that theme for my “real” blog, how do I lock into the picture I want?

Don’t be afraid to explore your dashboard and get to know it. :)

    > Appearance > Header – is that something I need to type in?

O.K., I’m going to study my dashboard. I’ll look for > Appearance > header

‘Could be the hour, maybe more clear in the morning. Thanks for encouragement, really.

No. Go to your admin page. Look at the far left hand column and locate and click “Appearance” then click “Header”

Got it! Now I have the picture I want! I have yet to figure out how to get the title at the top in a font I’d like, but I’m really going to let it go until tomorrow, and read the instructional document. I’ve accomplished something for today, and I’m grateful for that. I’m sure it’s all possible, and user-friendly, there are just SO MANY options, it’s a bit of a labyrinth. Thanks for your help. I’ll be back, I’m sure.
