newby, linking Categories to Post problem

As a brand new user, I’m going through the tutorial and just created in Dashboard, some Categories in the Manage/Categories tab.
Then it says to click on the Posts tab and find my new Post, which I do, except I don’t see the 3 buttons it says to look for…one of which is ‘edit’ or “save’, so I’m not so far able to create any categories, even though I can see them listed in Manage Posts/<title>/Post/Categories…..but I can’t connect them to a Post, so they don’t show up on the page.

Write a post (Dashboard >write > post) Down at the bottom is a list of categories. Select as many as you need. Publish the post. Then the categories will show.

Thanks alot, that was so simple. The categories now show on my sample page.
The subcategories, thought, are aligned to the left with the categories.
In the write/Post/Write Post/Categories list they are staggered.
How can I get that set for the Site page?

That depends on the theme; some show a staggered list, some a straight list (and what’s the point, in that case?). Try checking a few themes under Design and see if the preview works for you. Then if you find one, click Activate and your blog will be in the new theme.
