Newby question: how to separate old sections of the blog from new sections?
-
Two years ago I started a really simple blog to keep friends and family in the loop when I took a trip. The header is a map of where we were going and all the posts were about the trip. Two years later we are getting ready to go on another trip and I would like to move all the old posts and the header to a separate area. I would then update the “home” page with a new header and all the new posts would go there. I have tried to Google my way to a solution, but nothing has worked so far. Is this a possibility? If so, can anyone tell me how to do this or point me to documentation?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. I’m afraid that’s not possible.
The header is uploaded for the blog, as in the whole one. Some themes can use the featured image on individual posts and pages as a header, but I don’t think your theme can do that.
As for the posts: posts by default appear on the home page and you can’t hide any posts form the main feed. What you can do is set up category pages, one for your old trip and one for the new. Assign all your old posts a specific category and create a category page using that category.
Then create a new category for your upcoming trip and add that category to the menu. You won’t be able to make the category page your home page, though, so you could consider creating a static page with a welcome message or something similar as your home page.
See these links for instructions on category pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Thanks for the reply! What themes can use the featured image on individual posts and pages as a header? I’m not married to cheateau…

Here are all the themes that have a featured image header: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/featured-image-header/ I suggest you try a few of them out to see how they work. Keep in mind each theme has different requirements as to the size of the featured image to have it display as a header. That info is usually at the bottom of the relevant theme’s support doc.
Also note the featured image header only works on posts and static pages. Category pages, archive pages and search results, as well as posts and pages without a featured image, will display your blog’s main header image (or images – some themes allow you to upload multiple headers which cycle randomly).
If you don’t have one, I suggest you register a new private blog which you can use to try out new themes before you commit.
