Newer Posts Button
-
I would like to have a “newer posts” button in addition to the “older posts” button on my blog page. Even better would be to have numbered pagination. This would mean that instead of continuously loading more and more posts, there would be only a fixed number of posts displayed on a single page. Older and newer posts could be navigated with the help of older posts and newer posts buttons or page numbers.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
This would mean that instead of continuously loading more and more posts, there would be only a fixed number of posts displayed on a single page
This is possible by going to My Site > Manage > Settings > Writing, scrolling down to Infinite Scroll and disabling it.
https://wordpress.com/support/infinite-scroll/
You can set the fixed number on the Writing page too, under Content Types or Feed Settings.

I’m not sure about this, in my experience this happens by default (although this could be to do with the theme I use – telling us which theme you are using may help in figuring out how to answer your question), but I’m sure another volunteer or staff member will be able to help soon!

I have followed the above steps. However, this only gives the “older posts” button. Clicking on the “older posts” button loads more posts in addition to those which were already displayed. I would like to see a “newer posts” button as well. This would mean that only a fixed number of posts are displayed at a time, something like page numbers in the blogroll might help what I want.
The theme I use is Baskerville 2.

Ah, sorry, I think I misunderstood your question. I’d thought you’d been referring to the option to go to a newer/older post when on the actual blog post itself, but now I think you’re referring to when on the blog feed? Please correct me if I’m wrong!
You can find out more about feeds at https://wordpress.com/support/feeds/.
I installed Baskerville 2 to my test site, created a few posts and tried to work out if it is possible to have a newer/older posts button on the blog feed. I made enough posts that I should have three different pages of blog posts, however more posts loaded and none disappeared as I clicked the ‘older posts’ button. I think I understand what you meant now.
My main site uses Stow and has the blog feed separated into different pages. I’ve checked and this site has exactly the same ‘Writing’ settings as my test site. The only difference is the theme.
I then installed Stow onto my test site. The newer/older posts button then appeared on the blog feed. So I think it must be something to do with the theme you are using.
So to have these ‘newer/older posts’ buttons, you’ll need a new theme. You can activate a new one by going to My Site > Design > Themes. You can find out about the theme by going to its info page (for example https://wordpress.com/theme/stow/; change the ‘stow’ part for whichever theme you want to look at).
NOTE: Once you’ve activated a new theme, certain pages/posts may be changed to the theme drafts. I would advise copying content on your main pages (e.g. home, about etc.) just in case.
You may find the old pages and/or posts in the Drafts by going to My Site > Site > Pages > Drafts or My Site > Site > Posts > Drafts. You’ll need to republish these by selecting them, and clicking ‘Publish’ in the top right-hand corner.

You can also delete the new theme’s page/post templates by going to My Site > Site > Pages or My Site > Site > Posts, finding the template, clicking the three dots and selecting Bin.

You may need to do some editing in the Customiser, especially of menus and any CSS.You might also wish to read https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#my-content-and-switching-themes for further information.
Do ask if you have any more questions.
