Newlines are being deleted

It’s pretty simple: I write my posts in Word 2003, I copy the text, I paste my text into the visual editor, I save the draft, and when I reload it, all the text has been collapsed into a single paragraph. It doesn’t matter whether I use hard or soft line breaks.

Hi there. The problem is Word. Word (and any other word processor) uses Rich Text Format, while WordPress.com (as all other websites) uses HTML. The two formats don’t play well together.
In the post editor toolbar, look for the Paste as Text button (second row, fourth button). If you paste your content using that button it should preserve at least some of your formatting while stripping out the rich text formatting that is likely to cause problems.
A better option is to use a plain text editor or an offline blog editor to compose your posts, rather than Word. See here for information on offline blog editors: http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

Hm, I’m going to have to use one of the blog editors for my needs. Thanks, I’ll hopefully find a way to convert my existing posts over to those programs without losing any formatting.

I’ve never used offline blog editors myself, but they might have a paste/import from Word function. Also keep in mind that the newest version of MS Office have a blog editor built into Word. Again, I’ve not used it myself, but perhaps you could download the demo version and test it out. Might make upgrading your version of Word worthwhile.
