News about Google fonts and GDPR?
-
Hi all,
I’m still in doubt about GDPR and the use of Google fonts.
I just can not use WordPress.org, because I am not really a tech fan. So I can’t use all the great online tips about saving the G-fonts on my own hosting server.
The attorneys who will build my Privacy Policy advise against the use of G-fonts for my WP-website (which isn’t online yet) – so what is to do?
(I will use the Personal fee for my site.)How do all of you handle this problem?
Thanks for any clues and opinions –

Hi there,
We have reviewed our use of Google Fonts and do not believe it to be a problem. The Google fonts API collects a very limited set of information and uses it only for serving the font to your site. You can read more about the data Google collects, stores, and uses in connection with Google fonts here: https://developers.google.com/fonts/faq.
However, if your attorneys insist that you should not use it, then you’ll need to use our Business Plan where you can upload a custom or third-party theme that does not make use of Google Fonts.
We might also have some themes on WordPress.com that are already not using Google Fonts, but I’m not able to provide you with a list of such themes.

Hi
and thank you so much for your information.
I’ll check out the link you gave me!I totally understand that you can’t provide me with a list of themes which don’t use GF – but can I myself find out by trying out a theme, if it uses GF or not? Where on the dashboard or in the admin area can I find this information?
Thanks again!

Hi Tamara,

To identify the fonts used on a theme, you have to activate the theme on a site and then use a tool like WhatFont.
It’s a manual process, but that’s the only way to tell what font is used.

Hey, that’s great! I really appreciate the information, thank you!
Have a nice day
