News Zipper?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to add a news box to my blog, which would allow me to create a space on my front page where I can quickly post breaking news without displacing items I want to remain for longer periods of time. Is there a plugin for this? My blog is http://mcevans82.wordpress.com/. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins. They are only for WordPress.ORG installs.

Are you aware of the coder restrictions? See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ As you have not provided the code for news zipper we cannot provide a definitive answer. If it’s a Flash widget then see here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/07/22/gigya-shortcode-3-widgets/

Since you are using Depo Masthead, I don’t believe there’s a specific way to do that easily — though you could use a widget, the footer area probably isn’t the ideal place to post “breaking news,” which you’d presumably want someplace more obvious.

Other themes have different post formats — the aside format, for example, might be workable for something like this — and Vigilance has a “notification” area that could be used for a rotating “breaking news” item, though I think it’s more generally used for more permanent announcements.

Other themes have a “featured” area where you could post something of that sort.

There are no plug-ins on wp.com, just widgets.

You might want to set up a test blog (keeping it private) to try out different themes and see if any work well for what you’d like your blog to do while still keeping the feel of your current blog. Try searching the themes for “news” and for “magazine.”

Ok. But is there a way to create a sidebar or some sort of box on my home page, where I could post breaking news without displacing items that I would like to remain on my home page?

Thanks, mmadfan. I will look into your suggestions.

No and that’s why I did not suggest that. Let’s try and deal with this issue one step at a time. The bottom line here is regardless of which theme you choose unless we have the code for the news zipper widget we cannot determine whether or not you can use it at all on any theme here. I(f it’s a Flash widget there may be a way to translate the code into a gig shortcode that you can use on any theme. The most appropriate theme for you is likely to be Inuit Types.

Please post the code for the widget between backticks ` (not to be confused with the single quote mark) here into a comment box. The backtick is found on the same key as the ~ in lower case. It’s the key to the left of the number 1 key on your keyboard.

Once we have it then you can determine which theme you may want to use it on.

edit: “gig shortcode ” was meant to be “gigya shortcode”

Why don’t you just tweet breaking news and use an RSS or Twitter widget to pull in those posts? If you hashtag them #Breaking or #News you can use the RSS widget to pull in ONLY those tweets, not your others.
