Newsletters

Help! I need to start a newsletter online, one that gets emailed with PDF attachment (with which to print hard copy newsletters), and I’m clueless. I already have a free WordPress. But I need to get a WP newsletter going for the musicians union — they will reimburse me for any upgrades.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi

You are able to set up your WordPress.com website so that people can subscribe to the individual blog post via email, but it’s not possible to send out a PDF directly from WordPress.com.

You could add MailChimp sign up form to your website, create the PDF on your computer, and send the PDF via mail chimp (here’s some information on how to do that: https://blog.mailchimp.com/adding-file-attachments-to-mailchimp-email-campaigns/)

If you have a WordPress.org (or self-hosted WordPress site) there may be a way to generate a PDF, but I don’t have any first hand experience with that. WordPress would still not be able to automatically send the PDF for you. You’d need to use an email marketing service for that.

    Hope this helps!

One more question. New job. They’re open to restructuring the way they handle member newsletters. I’m trying to talk them into adding a WordPress blog to their existing website.

Is there a way to understand how to create “newsletters” as blogs? The one caveat is, to create an opening page for each quarterly issue, aka blog, that offers teasers of stories (basic four articles) with links. When you click the links, then you get to read the entire article. I’m having a hard time figuring this out.

    Thanks!

  • You’ll want to create the actual newsletter part itself using your email marketing tool (such as MailChimp or Constant Contact or many others). In that email, you’ll be able to include the teasers and then those teasers will link back to individual blog posts in your WordPress blog.

You can create a category in your blog called “Newsletter” and include all of your articles there. You can also have other categories in your blog as well if you’d like to write articles that may not be included in your newsletter.

    Hope this helps!

This support doc explains how readers can subscribe to your blog to receive email notifications of all of your posts.

    Sorry, another question.

I already have a WordPress but it’s my personal account. I need to know how to open a WordPress account for a musicians union, for their newsletter.

They need me to plug in features, then we’ll work on the teasers for the MailChimp.

I don’t know if I can add a blog via my personal account then add them (musicians union officers) as administrators so they can work on the newsletter too. OR, if they have to open the union WordPress on their end with their own newsletter email, then add me as administrator too so I can go in and blog.

  • I would suggest opening a new account under the Union’s name and tied to your work/union email address. Then you can add other members as users so that they can edit the blog too.

You can sign out of WordPress.com (click on your photo in the upper right hand corner) and then visit WordPress.com to start the process over with a new account.

    Hope this helps!
