Newsworthy: CSS help needed

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ve opened my trial site with Newsworthy and done a fair bit with CSS customization.
    Some things I just can’t work out how to do (and if you check my CSS page you’ll find I’ve done a helluva lot on my own):
    1 – text in sidebar widget ‘Follow blog via email’ too big; want it 11px like other widget text and can’t track it down in CSS;
    2- can’t find blue block behind menu items on a:hover. I want to change that color;
    3 – when sitting on the front/blog posting page, the menu doesn’t show the blue block behind ‘blog’;
    4 – want to make sidebar narrower and content wider;
    5 – don’t know how to change date format in side tags for posts;
    6 – would love to be able to reduce space between par.s (in Word I do this by changing before and after spacing).

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    1. Text in subscribe widget.

    .widget_blog_subscription p {
        font-size: 11px;
    }

    2. This controls the blue hover color on the menu.

    .navigation-main ul ul a:hover {
        background: #01A0DB;
    }

    3. This one had me confused for a moment until I looked at your custom menu and at the “blog” item and saw that you included “www” in the URL. That was what was causing the issue. WordPress.com does not use www in URLs here. Since I was in there, I just went ahead and fixed it for you. Here is the CSS to change the color of the blue on the current menu item.

    .navigation-main li.current_page_item a, .navigation-main li.current-menu-item a {
    background: #00AEEF;
    }

    4. These control the widths of the main content area (.column) and the sidebar (.sidebar-column). You can take away from the sidebar and add to the main content area. As a general rule, if you reduce the sidebar by 5%, add 5% to the content area. The two together add up to 96% (4% between them) so as long as the two numbers add up to 96% things should work fine.

    .column {
        width: 64.667%;
    }

    .sidebar-column {
        width: 31.333%;
    }

    5. In many themes, you can set the date format at Settings General and have it change the date format on the posts, but that doesn’t happen with Newsworthy. I’ll check into this on Monday with the theme designers.

    Oops, I forgot #6. Add this and adjust the 1.5em value as desired.

    p {
        margin-bottom: 1.5em;
    }

    THANKS from the heart! Everything will be utilised before I’m very much older (the mind boggles).
    Interesting about no. 5, eh? – and because I really do mean to move my site to Newsworthy once I’ve got the trial 100% effective, I would very much appreciate a result on this one, too.
    I hope I’m not asking for too much. The thing is that I like Newsworthy very much – apart from its colouring, that is, and things like the ratio of content:sidebar. I’ve done everything I can in CSS, but there have been all these other things I just couldn’t work out, being a complete tyro at all this. But by all the gods, it really is FUN! :-)
    Thanks again, tsp – yer a champeen!

    You are welcome, and CSS customization is a blast.

    I’ll post back here on #5 as soon as I get word back from the designers.

    May I be cheeky and ask for another thing that was going to be asked of designers on my behalf, then …?
    It’d be really ace to be able to make the caption under an image into a link to another site – as per my writer image, where I’d love to be able to have the caption link to the photog’s site …

  • Unknown's avatar

    Well, your wish is our command. You can add links to captions now. Go here and scroll down to the image of the horses and you will see linked text in the caption. The captions now accept some HTML.

    I would suggest creating the linked text in the post or page editor, then switch to the text tab and copy that code out, which would look something like this:

    <a href="SITE_URL">Your text here</a>

    You then paste that into the caption field.

    Ker-ikey!!! All pure gold! :-D
    You know, I’ve often done that with text widgets, so why I didn’t think of it for captions, I don’t know.
    [thinks]
    That’s a lie: I do know. I never think of anything for myself. Sighh …
    Merci beaucoup, and mille grazie as well.
    Your hat’s almost as good as mine!

    Thanks, and there is a resemblance in head gear. :)

    @margaretrosestringer, I have filed a ticket on the date formatting in Newsworthy. I can’t make any promises on how soon it will be changed, or even if, but once I hear, I will post back here in this thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

    In which case I shall not unsubscribe from it, but wait with bated breath. [grin]
    Your involvement in my search for this particular grail is very much appreciated, tsp.

    Hi, @margaretrosestringer, I heard back on the date format issue, and due to the design of the Newsworthy theme, the date format, at this time, cannot be changed.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello O Hatted Wonder – and thank you very much indeed for taking the time and effort to look into that.
    Now off to try something else (of course): the American date format is something really confusing to Aussies. I’ve often wondered how/why the different preferences arose. But there! – you possibly have other things to do with your time than allocate it to such philosophical meanderings.
    Thanks again, tsp!
