Newsy: double content columns – add separating vertical
-
I already have in place one of these to separate content from the sidebar; and now that I’ve gone for double content columns, I’d like the same between them. Please.
I know I should be able to work it out; one of the difficulties I find with the Forums is the way the originating person’s name disappears, so I don’t know how to find what I started. :-( I know: moronic.
ANYWAY. Please may I have the CSS?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, I looked at your site and see a content column and one sidebar, so I worked this out off of the demo site and I’m not entirely sure how it will align at the bottom, but I think it will be fine. You can edit the color code in the border declaration as desired. I’ve used a bright red so that you can see the result easily.
#primary { position: relative; } #content:before { border-left: 1px solid #CC0000; bottom: 10%; content: ""; left: 50%; position: absolute; top: 0; z-index: 1; } -
Oh, there you are! I reverted to the original, because I thought my umpteenth question had slipped through the cracks, tsp.
I’ll have a go now – after offering you the usual slew of thanks based on genuine gratitude! :-) -
You really do know your game, don’t you? :-)
Any way I could be using more of the whole width of the site?
Do you think I’ll EVER stop asking for help?
I will, I promise! -
You are welcome, and don’t tell anyone about the above super-secret, sacred CSS. It is highly confidential. :)
The latest CSS3 standards have added a whole pile of very useful stuff and I have to reveal that I found it with a Google search and then modified it to work with your theme.
-
You MODIFIED what you found? – makes me feel much better about being a narfwit. I mean, if you had to search and then modify, not even a madman could expect me to get with shouting distance of such coding.
You’re a clever bloke, alright! Please provide greatly advanced notice of when you plan to go on hols, OK? [grin]
And, Richard? – anything to offer me on my only partly-related question up there? (the one about width of page …) -
Sorry, I missed that. The following will increase the overall width by 200px (100 for each content column and leave the sidebar the same width as before. I also increased the width of the widgets in the bottom. The bottom rule effectively centers the images in the slideshow in the second footer widget location, but doesn’t increase the size of the images. That is tricky and I’m on my way to dreamland in just a few minutes. I’ll take a look at the image sizing and see what I can do about it tomorrow.
#branding hgroup, #access ul.menu, #access div.menu > ul, #main, #supplementary, #colophon-menu, #site-generator { width: 1178px; } .wide-sidebar #primary, .wide-sidebar #content { width: 842px; } .post-display-two-columns.wide-sidebar .hentry { width: 406px; } #menu-wrapper { width: 1216px; } .four > div { width: 272px; } .slideshow-slide { width: 270px !important; } -
WOT?! – you chose to go to bed rather than deal with my endless subjectively-oriented demands???
[grin]
You remain my hero, in spite of so appalling an act.
I await whatever you choose to send, whenever you choose to send it.
With a heart full of thanks for your existence. -
tsp … dunno what to say to make my apparent ingratitude appear less … but I couldn’t cope with finding the marvellous vertical there on the page and running all the way through any post one clicks on to read the wider version.
:-(
So I removed it again. BUT, she said hastily, one can only ascertain these things by trying them: it’s not as if a narfwit like me would ever have thought of that in advance, is it?!
So now you have two things to forgive me for.
[gulp!] -
Oh dear, sorry for not thinking of the fact that it would show also on the single post pages. Use the following to add the line between the row of posts, which targets only the blog page and archives style pages (categories, tags and archives).
.blog #primary, .archive #primary { position: relative; } .blog #content:before, .archive #content:before { border-left: 1px solid #CC0000; bottom: 10%; content: ""; left: 50%; position: absolute; top: 0; z-index: 1; } -
Ah, you’re back!! Hello! :-)
You may’ve noticed (and equally may not’ve) that I have removed all that wonderful coding. The reason for this is that I’ve been waiting for your return so that I can ask you about (1) slideshows when it’s been applied and (2) other things like videos being unable to be centred.
I REALLY DO APOLOGISE for constantly making demands, Richard; but it’s your own fault! If you weren’t so bloody accommodating, I’d stop.
[grin] -
Um. Bother. I think I’m referring not to the colum-oriented coding but the widening of the page coding.
Talk about a trial! – M.R., you’re a truly boring person.
:- -
Gimme a couple of minutes and I’ll put it all back in place, OK? – and then you can see what I’m maundering on about.
-
Done. If you will navigate to my post called “Loss … footed in joy” you’ll find a slideshow all crammed over to the left.
And videos can’t be centred, either.
Now I shall include your code of today …
But I warn you, Richard: from you I now expect only perfection. [grin] -
RICHARD …! May I have your attention, please? See the above? You’re the one who has to fix this for me …
-
The slideshow is full width. The slideshow images are “all crammed over to the left” because of this:
.slideshow-slide { width: 270px !important; }Do you remember when and why you added this?
-
Panos, without wishing to appear rude or demanding, I want to draw The Sacred Path’s attention because it is he who has been getting me along with a whole lot of CSS coding.
It would be much easier for everyone if it were left to him to finalise.
Thank-you for you willingness to intervene. -
You’re welcome, but I bet Rich won’t agree with your suggestion. What he will agree with is you need to turn this:
.slideshow-slide {
to this:
#supplementary .slideshow-slide { -
Ain’t MY suggestion. All this is done by him. The slideshow is simply left over because he needed to find out something else.
He has since forgotten all about it, and I’m doing by best to get his shoulder back to the wheel. -
I meant he won’t agree with this:
“It would be much easier for everyone if it were left to him to finalise.”
