Next and Previous Post links incorrect

  • Unknown's avatar

The posts category ‘Travels’ need to be chronological. From the category page they appear listed in the correct order. On each post, however, each ‘Previous Post’ and ‘Next Post’ link takes the reader to random pages.
In fact on the first post there isn’t even a link to ‘Next Post.’

Down the page you’ll see some posts numbered 5,6, etc. If you go on to Post 6, the ‘Previous post’ takes you to Post 7, and ‘Next Post’ takes you to Post 5.

I understand you can tinker with the CSS to fix this on a WordPress.org site, which I indeed do on another site. This WordPress.com site, however is free ‘mirror’ site of my other one.

I would like to know if:
    a) I could just remove these ‘Previous Post’ and ‘Next Post’ links and then put relative URLs. That would work for me
    b) If there was any way of correcting this problem without an upgrade; that is in a free WordPress.com site.
    Many thanks.

Posts are listed in reverse chronological order (newest on top), and the Previous/Next links reflect this order: previous = older, next = newer. So your Previous/Next links are working as expected.

You can’t remove these links without the Custom Design upgrade. And you can’t change what they say even with the upgrade, because what they say comes from the PHP of the theme, which we cannot access.

What you can do is simply switch to a different theme. Many themes don’t display such links at all on the single post view, and many other themes display the actual titles of the previous/next posts. See the lists in this post of mine:

But note that the newest themes aren’t listed – see the red note in my sidebar. You can check the demos of the newest themes here:

    Hi Justpi,
This is the second time you’ve helped me out with a detailed thoughtful response. Appreciated. I was thinking of using a different theme. The list you’ve provided of ones without navigation links is very useful and I’ll try some of those out.
    Thanks again.
    Stephen.
