No active name servers
-
I originally registered a domain with WordPress.com, but later decided I wanted to use another host, NearlyFreeSpeech, so that I could properly learn the basics of setting up a site using the command line interface and install WordPress.org.
There’s a 60-day lock on newly registered domains, so I can’t do a full domain transfer for the time being. But I know that I can in the meantime point WordPress.com’s DNS Records to NearlyFreeSpeech by changing the authoritative name servers.
I have done this within WordPress.com’s settings for my domain. I know I need to wait a while for DNS changes to propagate, which is fine.
However, I’m a little bit worried because on NearlyFreeSpeech’s end, it says there are no active name servers for my domain at all. This was the case both before and after I changed the authoritative name servers on WordPress.com from the defaults to NSF’s.
Could this be a problem with my CNAME and A Records?

Hi there,
I’ve checked your domain’s name servers, and I can confirm that they are correctly set up to point to your hosting provider, NearlyFreeSpeech.
Rest assured, everything is working as intended, and there’s no need for any further action on your part. Your domain’s DNS records are properly configured, and your website should be accessible without any issues.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to help.

Hi fstat,
Thanks for your quick reply; that’s relieving to hear.
But I’m still at a loss. There are still no active name servers listed on NearlyFreeSpeech’s end. Also NFS still says “there is a discrepancy between your authoritative and active name servers”. It gives NFS’s two authoritative servers for the former. For the latter, none.
Also, my site currently loads problematically. It always seems to require two loads; the first time I enter the URL, it results in a blank landing page saying my browser cannot establish a secure connection to the server. When I refresh the page however, it redirects me to the .wordpress.com version of my domain.
Is this all just a propagation issue – should I give it a bit more time?

Hi there – Based on the symptoms you are describing it is almost purely a propagation issue. The public info available for your domain shows name servers are set.
I would also recommend the following:
- Clear your web browsers’s saved cache and cookies
- Try viewing your site through a second web browser you do not normally use and/or from a second computer
I’ve visited your site today at and I see a WordPress install screen. Refer to WordPress.org for the help you need to install and continue moving forward. And be sure to use the forums if you get stuck or need help. Happy WordPress’ing. :)
If for any reason you find the self-hosted route too challenging or requiring more time than you thought you had available, don’t hesitate to bring what you have over to WordPress.com and we can help.
