  I have a self hosted non-commercial blog but want to install jetpack mostly for social media sharing and email following. I understand I need to sign up to wordpress.com. Does this mean that I will have to have adverts on my blog?

  you need the account to make the JetPack Plugin work – as long as you have your site not here and use the WordPress.ORG software you will not have any ads on your site – JetPack does not to my knowledge put any ads on your site
