No advertising, I know… but…
-
I know I know, no advertising on WordPress. I truly believe that wordpress is the best tool out there. It’s only downfall is no adsense.
Adsense and ads don’t have to be instrusive. they can be well placed, and beneficial for the readers, the blogger, and wordpress. I wouldn’t mind AT ALL if WordPress took a % of revenue that came from ad programs like Adsense, after all, my blog is free to me. I say allow ads, most of us probably wouldn’t get any real income from ads, but every lit bit helps. And if WordPress took 5% or 10% off the top, that’s revenue to WordPress to help support the ongoing free blogs.
Readers get relevant ads that may or may not help them, blogger gets some revenue, WordPress gets some revenue. It’s a win-win. Commericalism isn’t all bad when done responsibly.

What I don’t understand is why folks just don’t grab a copy of the software from wordpress.org, go find a host, and do what ever adverts that they want.
There are already a hundred threads on this subject, many with the same idea that you suggest. Boils down to security, protection from the overrun of spblogs like that at blogger, and not the point of wp.com.
Oh, and you owe me a steak dinner. :)

lol! I think a ‘Are you sure you searched the forums before posting?’ mandatory checkbox should be in the new item page! Still makes me laugh!

Hosting is inexpensive and the blog templates from wordpress.org are free of charge. But it sometimes seems to me that those who desire most to pimp their blogs for pennies are just too cheap to spend a few on hosting to do so. Perhaps they have bought into the myth of “I made a million on the internet” … lolBut I sure do support your idea of the mandatory check-box for the ideas forum “Prior to posting this I checked the forum search box and found no similar threads”. Why don’t you post it because there are no forum threads in the forum search box on it? ;)

and again I say, there’s already Adsense on your blog. The reason WordPress.com won’t permit you to put Adsense on your blog and give them a kickback of revenue is that they have it already, you’ll see it if you’re not signed in, and the way it’s set up they are keeping 100% of revenue.
I have suggested, and they said they would consider, doing a revenue split in the future. If this is what you’re interested in I suggest you send them a feedback to that effect.
-
Ummm … actually what was said can be found by reading this thread from the official wordpress.com blog. I believe the possibility of offering advertising as a paid upgrade option is what’s being considered.
Before that, however, we will probably do something that you have more control over such as Amazon or Goodstorm integration.
And I don’t think that’s what the people who post these “ideas” are thinking of.

No, but this is all information they need to have. What we’re really talking about is transferring the ownership of the right to advertise from Wordsense to the individual blogger. And WordPress did at the time I made the suggestion say that they would consider a revenue split. Perhaps they’ve rejected the option since, but I haven’t heard a word either way from the company.

Wordsense – that’s what it should be renamed to if they allow Google Ads.
/me shakes his head with disbelief at having to wade through yet another pointless adsense thread and wanders off to see if he can help someone.

I never liked the idea of a percentage of the revenue. It should be the same for everyone like a flat fee. Like at TypePad. It wouldn’t even have to be javascript. Sponsors done up in html code. Oh well. But you can see if you qualify for VIP Hosting. But it would cost money up front if you qualify:

We shouldn’t be telling folks just to search. We should be pointing them specifically to where the information is. Half the time I’m searching for something, I have to dig for it myself.
-
I was just joking around. You know the irony that I meant (being in forums a bunch). Of course, those people that post in here generally need help and that is the purpose of the forum and I certainly wasn’t trying to make light of it. Enough said.
-
Oh, agreed. Granted we should be pointing out folks to teh search function. You may have noted that I try to include a link to the search that I used or mention how I found the information. Give a man a fish and all that.
