Ads are part of the deal for the free hosting. Those servers must be paid for after all!
To get rid of ads completely, you need to upgrade to a paid account. Thankfully, there’s no a new $5/month plan.

There is a new plan at $5 a month, however comments on it are indicating that there are still ads showing. The post about it is here on the wordpress blog https://wordpress.com/blog/2022/05/25/introducing-wordpress-starter-make-your-mark/
Some clarity on this from WordPress, which as we are finding out is very lacking with this company, needs to be made on this. You cannot charge customers so that you can run ads. Also they’re charging more than the Personal plan with the same storage limit, but still aren’t allowing plugins on this new plan. If this new plan actually does not show ads, then maybe it’s the solution you want.

My bad: I just checked the pricing page, and it’s publicly indicated that the $5 does NOT remove ads: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Both the pricing page and announcement page are OFFICIAL sources which have all the pertinent details, so I’m not sure what clarity is lacking again.

Not to get into an argument here, but nothing stops them from doing this. And it’s actually pretty common for companies to use ads or other means to “subsidize” (their argument) their lowest plans. Eg many email marketing service providers include a “Powered By” link in emails for their lowest-tier PAID plans. I run a forum software that charges more to remove the “Powered By” link than the cost of the forum software itself.

This doesn’t seem to be the case: both the announcement post and pricing page clearly show the new $5 plan comes with 6GB storage (compared with Free plan’s 1GB).

The Personal plan offered 6gb storage at $4 per month, versus Starter with 6gb at $5 per month.

Then I guess it’s up to customers to decided whether or not they are willing to support this company’s advertising platform going forward, when in the past, purchasing a paid plan removed ads. As a customer since 2014, I cannot support this and will not add any new domains to my account just so I can display their ads.

I had not checked the pricing page before making comment about it.
This company is making itself a joke in my opinion… but going back to the original question in this thread, there is no solution for removing ads now unless you’re on the “Pro” plan…

Also to point out, there is a chance that maybe the Starter plan doesn’t actually include requirement to display ads and that wasn’t taking out of the pricing table… so yes some clarity is actually in order…
