No Categories/Hiding Categories

I’m a fan of tags over categories, and am trying to find a way to get rid of the “Posted in (Category)” with each post. I’d rather just tag things. Is there are way to turn off categories, or hide it at least?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In the iNove theme, yes under theme options. In the other themes here, no there is not unless you have CSS editing experience and the paid CSS upgrade, and even then in some themes, all the meta stuff is under one selector, which means hiding categories also hides date, author, tags and in some cases even the comment link.

As far as categories vs tags, the search engines treat them both the same, so using one or the other doesn’t make any difference that way.

Thanks, for the info. The issue isn’t anything about search engines, as mentioned I don’t like categories, trying to funnel a post under a category is inconvenient as opposed to tagging it for multiple identifiers.

The way wordpress is set up, posts have to be assigned to at least one category. Why not just rename “uncategorized” to something like “blueflamemagick” and then it will be automatically assigned to each post and you won’t have to worry about it.

As far as hiding them, again it would require the CSS upgrade, and in some themes, it isn’t possible to hide ONLY the categories.

*nods* Thanks again, that’s a really good idea. I had renamed uncategorized as “_” but I didn’t like the aesthetic of that.

You’re welcome. If you rename it with the name of your blog, that represents one more way that people can find you since the wordpress.COM global tags pages have really big search engine juice.

Problem with that is, sometimes staff penalize blogs that have unique categories like their blog name. Remember dissfunktional?

Hmmm, I had forgotten about that. Soooo many things to remember, so little space in my mind left. I need to upgrade my RAM.

    Tell me about it.

For the record: Dissfunktional had her blog name as a tag and category in every post and her blog got essentially thrown down a well, bumped off the global tag pages, etc. It was a tremendous hit to her stats since search engines had a great deal more difficulty finding her.
