Styles for Crowdsignal Poll

  • Cheers @petitpoisvideos :D

    And @sharonharvey2, that image will not appear automatically, but you certainly can download the image from an old poll, upload it to your media library, then pick that as your background. Or, there are many other images out there to choose from.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi @supernovia

    That sounds really interesting to try…..but what about the ‘poll’ thats already on the picture – that will still be there wont it and not look right? As illustrated here :

    But the background as illustrated in the pic will look good on the bottom like this:

    @sharonharvey2

    Hi! If you are determined to use this image, and not want to search for something to replace it with, there are ways to cut the unwanted stuff out of an image.
    Free photo editors online to find.

    But; if you don’t know how to do that, I’d be happy to do it for you, to the best of my ability. Right now it’s night time where I am, but have a think about it and let me know in the morning.
    The image will come best out if you can manage to let me have the largest (in pixel size) you can find.

    helper-heroponriki,

    The older styles no longer comply to modern web standards and they will be removed completely in the near future.

    That may be so, but it may also be beside the point. @sharonharvey2 has undoubtedly read some other posts by staff in this thread urging her to abandon her efforts to display one of the old styles in the old manner, and yet she has repeatedly expressed an interest in not abandoning this effort. The fact that staff-doublebassd and myself have been able to display the old styles has surely encouraged her to persist in those efforts.

    Why stick with something that WordPress.com has urged one to move on from?
    WordPress.com has been recommending that members replace retired themes with newer themes for as long as I’ve been here (since 2008), and yet I happily continue to use retired themes on all of my primary sites, without encountering any significant trouble as a result. Also, I vastly prefer the WP-Admin editor to each of the subsequent editors that have come along over the past several years, including, of course, the Block Editor. For me, the retired themes are the best themes, and the WP-Admin editor is the best editor. I’ll not give them up until they are torn away from me.

    If a member wants to achieve something now that is clearly attainable, the fact that it might not be attainable one month or six months from now might be irrelevant. @sharonharvey2 has not asked for a guarantee that the old styles will be available in the near or distant future, but only to be able to apply them in the present. I think she deserves an explanation as to why she hasn’t been able to do obtain the result that staff-doublebassd and myself have. If we can’t find a reason to explain why she hasn’t been able to do so, then let’s just say so.

    @supernovia
    ,

    Are you saying that when one inserts a poll inside a cover block featuring a background image, then the cover block image will appear as the background for the poll?

  • Thanks @petitpoisvideos. I found an image here. This is an old image on an old site. It’s fairly tiny and I couldn’t find another version of it.

    I just gave it a whirl and felt like the text/media block may be best, since a cover block wants a bigger image. It’s not perfect because the image is designed to have a little quote bubble over it, and also the image is small and doesn’t resize well. Here’s what looked best (imo) and the code I used:

  • @musicdoc1, it’s a matter of what we can and cannot support.

  • @sharonharvey2, if the previews here are fine to you, please confirm if it’s okay for us to upload that image for you, then we could add it to a draft post so you can copy and paste.

    Personally, I’d encourage you to find a different illustration though, since this one is small and doesn’t “stretch” on large screens very well.

    @supernovia,

    Understood, although it appears that some unsupported things remain working fine for years, but allow me repeat my last question, which you might have missed.

    Are you saying [here and here] that when one inserts a poll inside a cover block featuring a background image, then the cover block image will appear as the background for the poll?

    And if so, will you provide or point to an example of that?

  • Yes, the cover image will appear as a background for the poll.

    I recommend against using that particular image as a cover image though because it’s small and gets stretched out. It doesn’t look good. So I provided an example using the media and text block instead.

  • Personally if I were using that image on my site, I would modify the image so she has a full quote bubble (just empty) or get rid of the bubble itself.

    But, I’d recommend using another image if possible.

    Thanks. I’d visited that link before and saw what looked like pieces of images. I hadn’t recognized that they needed to be expanded. : )

    Hi all – a new day!
    I’ve spent the morning making some suggestions for susanharvey2’s poll.
    Hope you can view them at https://petitpoisvideos.com/2361-2/

    I also have the files at https://www.dropbox.com/s/ohyml1so90jz1qh/Writer.zip?dl=0

    -which I hope will work.

    You are welcome to download what you may think will work.
    Good luck!

    (I will take down the page in a couple of days.)

  • Thank you petitpoisvideos!

    Hi guys.

    Just to let you know I’ve not forgotten you, not feeling to great so having a rest over the weekend. Then all being well I’ll get back to you guys on this ongoing issue.

    If I do feel better later I will come on then.

    Just to keep you guys updated.

  • Feel better, @sharonharvey2. Would you mind if we closed this out and started a fresh topic focused on current options?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @supernovia

    Hi. If you close this thread, should I keep my suggestion available – you think?
    (Focused on current options good idea.)

  • I think so until they’re ready. Thank you, @petitpoisvideos.

    Hi guys, sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your good wishes @supernovia i am feeling much better now.

    Going back to @musicdoc1’s post, thank you to you @MusicDoc1 for your support here.

    I do understand people want me to abandon the current image but if I like it why should I? I get things move forward but for some like the person I mentioned in another thread ans myself we like the current images and don’t see why we should be made to do it just because some others have decided they are are to be extinct.

    So the images I cannot see which @Musicsoc1 has been trying so hard to help me with initially I’m not suppose to see as they are going to be gone anyway? Is that what your saying? I though they were meant to be visible as they are current images that are being used. So if the latter is correct then I still have a problem…

    You have to remember I’m not technically minded unfortunately- if I do something brilliant on a laptop then I get very excited – as for images – well that’s another matter!

    For instance @Supernova that image you have created for me of the old image I want, I couldn’t have done anything like that hence my question of how to get rid of the text and then post as a background.

    I have found an updated picture I do like now….this is it below

    But I cant work out, how to use it as just the background and add the buttons from there…..?🙁

    Hi Sharon, good to see you about.
    Have you looked at this?

    Hope you can view them at https://petitpoisvideos.com/2361-2/

    The files are here for you to download if you want;
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ohyml1so90jz1qh/Writer.zip?dl=0

  • Thanks @petitpoisvideos :)

    And @sharonharvey2 if you like that image, here’s what I’d do if I were you:

    1) Start in the Block Editor

    2) On its own line (not in a classic block) type this:

    /media

    3) Pick the option for Media & Text (I’m realizing that works better than a background / cover block with these types of illustrations)

    4) You can choose which side you want the image on with the alignment option at the top. Click on the media option in that side and you should get a chance to add the image there.

    5) Add the image on one side

    6) Add the poll on the other side

    7) Customize colors if you’d like!

    Then save your changes. I made a video of that here. You’ll notice I’m not an expert in changing colors on the poll and accidentally clicked through to the crowdsignal site — oops! Since I am also not an expert at video editing (@petitpoisvideos is!) I will just leave that. You can see there are more options for the block, like the width and stuff.

    You can preview for different screens like I showed in the video. That’s being uploaded here now and should be processed shortly (or you can get the original)
