No common Media Library for all blogs ?

  • Unknown's avatar

I noticed that each blog has its own Media Library. Is there no common Media Library ?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No there is not. If you want to share an image between sites, you can insert an image from another one of your blogs by URL.

    Working With Images

This makes it impossible to see all my media files at a glance.
There is no view to see the thumbnails either, as I can see.
This too, makes WP quite hard to work with.

I certainly would not want the images that I have permission to use on one of my blogs to be a part of a common Media Library for all my blogs. When you are in your Media Library all you have to do is click and image title and the image will display on it’s own Edit Media page with all details, and if you click the “view” link the image will display on its own page, so I’m not clear what problem you are having.

Also note that we Volunteers answering support question do not provide support by email and posting your email address as a tag makes it available to spammers.

can you see my email ??

As reguards to your working method, it is clear that you like to click yourself arround whereas I am trying to reduce the number of clicks as much as possible. That is a big difference between mine and your working philosophy.

Hi @herman! Please do not get personally. If you’ve read all the responses given above, I hope your problem should be solved. Otherwise Take a quick look to WP.COM Support or Learn WordPress.com.

Oh.. I clicked submit too soon.
Someone, added a tag of e******[at]gmail.com with your question. I know it is not you, [@timethief did’nt].

@beckhart (a spammer) has done so.
    Apology @Herman.

I am fully aware that there are email address harvesting spam bots that crawl this and other public forums, as are WordPress.com Staff. In fact if you had placed your email address in your original post or in any comments here it would have been automatically redacted by the software so it could not be harvested. However, you placed it in the tags so not to worry as our Moderators will remove it for you.

As for my working philosophy you are not ware of what it is and it has zero relevance to the email address harvesting. We Volunteers are here to help our fellow bloggers and we try to do that well. If you do not feel the Volunteers are working up to your standards or you need special help then you can contact Staff and have them deal with all of your issues by using this link below rather than posting forum threads.

Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ After you use the searchbox at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.

That must have been before I came onto the forum. I appreciate your clarification and hope hermanminkowski does too. Have a good day. :)

I also notice that the Forum does not allow editing
Not just WPGAURAV but I am sure many many have experienced this PITFALL.
All other Forums I have seen are editable and searchable so what is the philosophy here with WP Forums ?

    ~~herman
Yep.. But I consider it as a speciality of WP.COM. :-)

    @hermanminkowski
There is no editing on these forums and has not been for many years because the function was being abused by some. I find not that having the ability to edit tends to make me more cautious when it comes to what I post. Even though I’m visually challenged and I make many more mistakes than fully sighted people do when posting, I do not miss it. We can simply post another comment to rectify any mistakes we make. :)

You should have SEEN it when editing was allowed. People used it to do all kinds of things including illegal things.

If you want a common media library, use Flickr and search for Creative Commons, or enable Zemanta on your blog.

When I use an image that I want available to several different sites I upload to (though they’re not all wp.com blogs), I usually use photobucket. Images that I’m pretty sure that I will only be using on my blog, I upload to my media library.

One reason I use photobucket, other than the fact that I can easily access the images regardless of the site I’m posting to, is that I can organize the images more easily (in individual folders, if I like), I can view largish thumbnails of all of my images in any single folder all on one page, and, if for some reason I’ve uploaded an image that I want to resize or crop or something, photobucket has some fairly reasonable image editing tools, too (I prefer to do it with an offline editor, but sometimes it’s convenient, especially for avatars and icons, to do it online).

I haven’t noticed any discernible slow-down using the images from photobucket — I upload optimized images — and although it’s conceivable that the site could go down, or the images could “vanish” if I weren’t actively accessing the account regularly, that hasn’t been a problem for me.

    Something to consider…

A common media library for a number of blogs would not be a good idea from an SEO standpoint. Having a common media library for an account would mean that the URLs for images that you inserted into your posts and pages would not have the URL of the blog in it, which means you would get no SEO for the blog from the images, and I don’t know about everyone, but about 20% of my search engine traffic is from image searches.

Excellent point. Thanks for raising it.

Thesacredpath said : A common media library would not be a good idea.
Because the URLs for images inserted into the posts would not have the URL of the blog in it.
That is easily remedied, mr Sacredpath. I only need to review the library myself, while the images belong to the different blogs.
It would be a virtual library only.
By the way, is there anything that you are not satisfied with WP ?
