No common Media Library for all blogs ?

That’s a very good point, TSP, especially since most of my referrals nowadays are coming from Google Images.

There is always room for improvement no matter where you host a site or what software package you use.

I would like to see free themes here with more user control and flexibility such as being able to decide on a page by page basis what widgets show on that page, but sadly those themes that have these types of advanced features out there in the wild are typically commercial and cost $$. That means they won’t show up here as “free” themes.

I’d like to be able to choose whether I show full posts on the main page, categories tags and archives pages.

I’d like to see the ability to decide whether the posts were displayed in reverse chronological or chronological order by just ticking a checkbox and hitting save. Some types of sites would be best in chronological order.

The thing is, wordpress.com is constantly improving and adding new features and abilities. It will never be “perfect” for everyone. No software ever will because not two people ever think, or do things, the same way or have the same priorities.

One of my biggest wishes came true a while ago with the introduction of custom menus. Those are a slice of digital heaven.

@raincoaster: do you think that people who arrive via image referrals actually read the associated post and then go further and read more? Given the search terms I’ve seen that have led people to images on my site, I really doubt that the visitors are reading the content of my blog or using it to find further information, etc.

And speaking from personal experience, I rarely read the page that contains an image I’ve searched for — I’ll glance at it, skim it over, but that’s it, and I don’t think I’ve ever then clicked around on the site, whether it’s a blog or not, to explore and read further.

I mentally discount all the image search referrals when I look at my stats. I think that if I had a photo blog, a fine arts blog, cartoon blog, or some other image-centric blog (perhaps like the Awful Library Books blog, which used to be on wordpress.com), I would certainly feel differently, but my images are incidental, usually, to the content, and it’s pretty rare for me to put up an image just for the sake of the image and made it the focus of the post, though I have done that on a few occasions. Well, I can think of one occasion recently, but there might be more.

I’m not an expert in SEO. But I’ve read somewhere, that if you post images from other sites, It takes more time to load your site because the browser crawls the image from “other” site. And also, Search engines, like Google, demote slow sites in their search results.

The virtual media library listing might be something that could be done, but whether it would be considered would depend somewhat on demand. Yours is the first request I’ve seen for such a thing in my 4+ years here, so…

According to Google, my site loads really fast, and it does seem to load quickly. I always optimize my images before I upload them.

@mmadfan, I am a voracious user of Google Imagesearch, but alas although I do click around and read the post on which that image was installed, my own stats are clear that most people don’t. Some, however, do, and it’s worth retaining them.

Agree, it is an improvement. Can I see a list of improvements for each upgrade of WP ? how do I know when a new upgrade is coming ?

Thanks folks, I learned some new things now. We have to end this thread since it is too long now, and there is no paging; nor numbering of the posts. So each time I have to page myself down several screens. Again, a strange feature of the Forum.

  • Unknown's avatar

As you’ll see now, there is paging (every 30 posts).

  • Unknown's avatar

    ~~panos.

You can also unsubscribe from the topic, if you prefer not to view it again.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes there is a paging but then it takes longer time to load. Besides, I cannot search my topics. Nor are they editable. The Forum seems not to add any novelty year after year. It is clearly much more difficult to use than many other Forums I have seen.

If you have a specific question about how to use the software and features and functions of WordPress.com multiuser blogging platform we Volunteers will be glad to provide an answer. If you simply wish to provide feedback to Staff on the presumed shortcomings of this blogging platform you are free to communicate with Staff directly by using this link. After you use the searchbox there at the bottom of the page below the search results there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.

  • Unknown's avatar

The WP staff does not respond to such questions. Normally I found that communicating with support staff is quite a nuisance…

  • Unknown's avatar

I have found the Staff to be very helpful and responsive

  • Unknown's avatar

So have I but without doubt patience is a virtue given the millions of WordPress.com bloggers there are and the fact that Staff are backlogged when it comes to support tickets.

I agree: forbearance certainly to be admired!

As the original question has been answered,

especially well in this numbered comment:
