No 'continue reading' link on home blog excerpt page

  I have my home page set up to show excerpts of my blogs. Two out of the three excerpts are fine but one of the blogs does not show its title or have the ‘continue reading’ link underneath. This blog is my first one and I’m pretty sure I used the ‘your first blog’ page provided by WordPress. I would delete it and try again except I assume it would then show today’s date and It really needs to have its original date. Any suggestions of what the matter is? The theme I am using is twenty seventeen.

  Did you forget to add the title, you have to add the read more while editing the post.

  The title is showing on the individual page (and when I go in to edit it). I didn’t need to add the ‘continue reading’ link on the other two blogs – both links just happened when I published it – which is why I am confused!

  As your third post doesn’t have a title when the first two do then you must have set it to a different “post format” to the others. Your theme instructions are here: https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen/

  Okay, setting the ‘post format’ to standard has solved the title problem – thank you! But the ‘continue reading’ is still not showing. Any ideas? The blog that I’m having the problem with is the first one I posted, and I just used the page WordPress shows when you start…

  @everydaykindoflife,

  The phrase “we didn’t have superlative food or a fantastic time with friends but it was so, so good” that appears in the excerpt of the post It’s been SO SO long doesn’t appear in that exact form in the single post. This indicates that you’ve added a specific excerpt. Adding a specific excerpt evidently overrides the automatic excerpt, which (without an excerpt added) would have been drawn from the content of the post.

  Thank you everybody! I’m still struggling to get to grips with the WordPress package – even more so on my first post! But, with your help, I’ve now sorted both problems out. Going by the blogs that were okay are the last two I’ve posted, there’s hope for me yet! Thank you.
