No free option for domain

  When I try to add a new site, only paid domain options are shown, no option for xyz.wordpress.com.

  It appears to be the same issue as this thread, which appears to have been resolved, but with no information on how.

  That is a very old thread you linked to, but free sites are still available. Type any word or phrase and you’ll be offered a free site below the two paid for options. It may be a .wordpress.com subdomain or it may be a .home.blog or similar subdomain. You can tinker with the offered address (to remove all/most numbers if the address shows lots of numbers) before accepting.

  I know that free sites are supposed to be available; the issue is that on my account, there is no free option below the paid ones. This is true of all keywords.
