No Icons In Visual New Post Screen
-
When in New Post, in Visual, the icons for the editor have disappeared. They have been there until yesterday. Also the icons are missing in the menu in the left hand side Dashboard Store etc. Basically I am iconless. I am using Twenty Eleven for two of my blogs and MisytLook for another and it is the same in all. I use Firefox browser and it is updated. Thank you for your help. I searched the forums but none of the related topics seemed current or applicable. Paula

What you’ve described so far sounds like a local caching or network issue to me.
Can you please try clearing your browser cache as a first troubleshooting step and then check for the icons again?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookiesIf that doesn’t help, is there any chance you can try checking it from a separate web browser to rule out a local browser settings issue as the source of the problem?
-
HI, Thanks for the reply.
I cleared my entire cache, then closed my browser, then opened my browser and loaded WP and no change except everything, as expected, took longer to load afresh.
I removed all WP cookies, closed browser, opened, no change except, as expected, I had to login to WP rather than automatically be logged in.
I have no access to another browser.
I have no issues with any other site and I use a lot of websites regularly, probably 30 per day.
Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks ! -
In addition, I just did a Clear Recent History per suggestion from Firefox and that didn’t fix it either.
-
Okay, since I’m unable to see the problem happening from my side and you can’t check another browser, I can just try my best to see if I can help guide you the best I can.
Here are some other ideas:
If you have any browser add-ons installed for Firefox, turn them of and try force refreshing an edit on WordPress.com page to see if the visual editor buttons come back.
In the past, other users have reported that a local network filter or firewall partially blocked some buttons for them (similar to your report), so you could check your network firewall or filter application settings to see if that’s what’s causing the trouble.
(This one’s a long shot,) try rebooting the router.
Last thing I can think of: you could try to get some additional debugging information by loading the Firebug add-on for Firefox and checking the web console area while you load one of the WordPress.com edit pages to see if any errors show up. If you can find an error, that might give us some clues for how to proceed.
-
Thank you again for your time and ideas. I disable all add ons in Firefox and no change.
I’ll reboot the router at the end of the day because others here are using the same connection, so I’ll see how it boots up tomorrow.
I’ve downloaded and enabled the Firebug add on but I don’t see how to turn it on to see the web console area………..
-
I figured out how to open the Firebug console. What information do you want to know? I may not reply until tomorrow……….

Just to make sure we’ve checked everything, can you confirm you have the visual editor turned on? There are two tabs at the top right of the edit area, Visual and Text, and you should have the “Visual” one active.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/Also, can you confirm your Firefox version is 21? What version of Windows are you running?
because others here are using the same connection
Can you try editing from one of the other computers!? Are you in a residential location or a workplace? Do you have access to an IT professional to ask them about what network firewalls or filters might possibly be installed at your location?
I figured out how to open the Firebug console. What information do you want to know?
First, log in to your dashboard.
Then load up the Firebug add-on and open the console panel.
Browse to any page that has the icon problem, such as https://nativeamericanjewelrytips.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php
Look under Console > Errors in Firebug after the page has loaded, and if you see any errors either copy them and paste them here or (even better) take a screenshot of the entire browser window:

This morning when I powered up I did Java update and all windows updates, then restarted my computer and still no icons in WordPress.
I’m using Firefox 21.0 and Windows 7, both completely updated.
Yes I have Visual editor turned on.
This is a two person office with no network firewalls or filters. I might be able to use the other person’s computer to check my blog later this morning. He also uses Firefox and Windows 7, but I’ll do that when he can spare the computer…….In the meantime,
When I open the Firebug console, and click on Errors, there is nothing in the screen below – it is blank. I have a png screen shot showing the no icons plus the clear Firebug error console……..but could not paste it into this email.
Suggestions on how to send it to you?

I just used my coworkers computer to log on to my blog and it is the same. He is checking to see if he has another browser.
-
He had Windows Explorer and the icons showed up fine there so it is a Firefox issue. They have not answered me yet – I posted yesterday. Any more Firefox ideas?
-
If you can upload the screenshot into your media library, I will be able to go in and see it. Can you try that and reply back here when it’s done?
I did check Firefox, and I also haven’t seen widespread complaints from other users about missing icons, so it does seem like an isolated issue for your office. Tracking down exactly what on your side might be causing it is a little tough, but I’ll keep working with you on ideas as long as I can think of things to check!
What about other Firefox browser add-ons? Do both of your computers have any besides Firebug?
-
Ok it is there now.
Add ons that I have are eSnipe which I have had on for years
Firebug
FireFTP
TroubleshooterThat’s it.
Thank you for your continued ideas and hope I can figure this out.
-
I also checked plugins and either disabled or updated those.
So right now I have Firebug enabled
and under PlugIns I have
Adobe Acrobat
Java
McAfee
enabled
All else turned off.
I’m going to temporarily turn off McAfee -

My webmaster looked at the code behind the icons and he thinks it is coded for Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox is not able to read it properly. Do you know of this issue with other WordPress items?
-
I fixed it.
In Firefox
Tools
Options
Content
Fonts & Colors
Advanced
check Allow pages to choose their own fonts -

WordPress.com is coded with these browsers in mind: http://browsehappy.com/ :)
But we do like to keep things working for older browsers whenever we possibly can.
Also, I did test with Firefox myself when you very first posted, so I knew it wasn’t an issue for Firefox in general. It sounds like it was just a problem you ran into because of your local browser settings.
I fixed it.
Wow, this is awesome—thanks for your persistence and for posting back with the final solution! I appreciate it a lot because it will help us troubleshoot this issue with others in case anyone else runs into it.

Since my office mate and I both had the same setting unchecked, that must be Firefox default………….so something all of a sudden changed somewhere.
Because as soon as we both checked that box we could see icons !!
Yippee.
I’m surprised those on the Firefox forums I posted to did not suggest this. I wrote them about the solution too.
Thanks for your interest and ideas. At least in the process I got my computer all udpated !! -
