No Index for Images?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

I’ve been blogging for several years now, and I’ve always had problems with traffic to my site, and when I would look around at other blogs I would wonder how their blogs were so easily discovered with so many followers even though I post plenty often and use good practices in terms of tags, headlines, meta descriptions, backlinking, etc.

But it finally dawned on me a problem that I’ve never considered in all my time blogging. I came across this article regarding image attachment pages: http://www.ampercent.com/prevent-indexing-wordpress-image-attachment-pages/9082/

For the longest time my images have been defaulting to create a media attachment page as opposed to linking somewhere else or not at all, and it never occurred to me to change it. Now I wonder if my SEO is bad because for every post I’ve created, multiple URLs have been created in which all people find are the image pages without content. Historically my bounce rate has also been suspiciously low, and I wonder if this might have something to do with it.

So my first question is, are these media attachment pages automatically NoIndex pages via WordPress’s hosting or is Google crawling these pages?

If so, my second question is, how do I go about making them NoIndex and fixing this problem? Because I’ve been blogging for so long, every one of my posts has an image, if not multiple, so hopefully it’s not a matter of doing it manually. But please let me know what the best approach would be.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hello Brian,

We took a look at your site on Google.

    https://www.google.com/#q=site:brianwelk.com+americansniper%2F

Notice that the link above shows no attachments indexed.

Individual image file links are not indexed…like those at:

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

If you want to adjust old photos, these do have to be changed individually. There isn’t a bulk tool to change them.

If you are interested in making adjustments to your images, you can do so by adding rel=”nofollow” to the HTML code for your images in the Text tab in your editor.

We host many very popular, highly-visited sites that use attachment pages for images. This isn’t a make-or-break issue when it comes to traffic for your site.

So you’re saying it’s not an indexing problem I’m having? Or perhaps something like this might be an issue on older posts? I’m also seeing that in the Google link you provided, a bunch of my tag pages are showing up. How do I NoIndex those, or is that even necessary or going to help?

    Hi Brian!

So you’re saying it’s not an indexing problem I’m having? Or perhaps something like this might be an issue on older posts?

You do not appear to be having an indexing problem. I had several of my colleagues look, too, just to confirm my findings. We’re all agreed. You’re not struggling with an indexing problem. We thought it’d be a waste of time to go back and make adjustments.

You are welcome to add to the HTML code of your images, going forward. However, this would be more for your peace of mind. I don’t believe you’ll see a difference.

I’m also seeing that in the Google link you provided, a bunch of my tag pages are showing up. How do I NoIndex those, or is that even necessary or going to help?

Your tags can actually be quite helpful, as long as you are using them efficiently and specifically.

    Organize Posts with Tags

I took a look at the tags from the results of this search:

    https://www.google.com/#q=site:brianwelk.com+americansniper%2F

I believe you’re using them well. American Sniper, Marlon Brando, Marion Cotilliard — all well done.

I think one of the tough issues you’re facing is that you have a topic that is popular subject with a lot of bloggers as well. If your blog was about Identical Twins who tap dance and are all Michelin-rated chefs, you’d have a lot more visibility.

Your job, if you want to raise visibility, will be to find other ways to grow readership. I suggest occasional guest bloggers and interviews…think about ways to get the readers of other, similar types of sites to come to yours.

I also suggest looking into sites like the following:
    http://www.adweek.com/socialtimes/top-movie-review-and-rating-sites/9675
See if they allow linkbacks to your site, if you leave comments.

You may also like our PollDaddy feature that allows your readers to vote or rate for films. Readers feel buy-in and loyalty to sites where they feel they have some interaction.

I think if you get creative with this sort of guerilla-marketing, you’ll see very positive results.

We want your readership to grow as well, so let us know if you have other questions at all.

Thanks Brian! It’s nice to hear from such a dedicated writer, who wants to keep moving onward and upward.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

Thanks again, I appreciate the help. I’ve never wanted to stop writing because that’s what I love but it’s been frustrating to say the least, and I feel like I’ve gone about a lot of best practices and tried to be creative over time, but those are some good ideas I hadn’t considered previously.

    Thanks for your help!
    Brian

    Brian,

I can totally empathize. You clearly put a huge amount of time and effort into your site. And I think it looks striking and cool. Hang in there…I feel like with the right “hook,” you’ll grab a larger audience.

If you don’t already, writing pingback articles linked to the DailyPost. I’ve seen a lot of traffic pick up for people’s site this way. It’s a huge networking opportunity.

I’m sending great vibes for a bump in traffic! Best to you.
