no link to the homepage from wp admin dashboard

  • Unknown's avatar

I suddenly find that there’s no link from the wp-admin interface to the homepage or front page of the site, on any of my WordPress.com sites. It’s kind of bizarre. Why would WordPress.com decide to no longer include a link to the front of the site from the backend?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I know that there are ways of getting to the homepage from the dashboard in the absence of a direct link, such as deleting all of the extension except the site URL, then updating the page, or (if you want to keep the dashboard open) opening any wp-admin interface page in a second window, deleting all of the extension except the site URL, and then updating the page. For those with a static front page, they can get to the home page by the route All Pages > published > static front page > view. However, having to do either of the above or something equally ridiculous just to get to the homepage is absurd.

You should be able to reach the home page by clicking on My Sites, and then clicking on the site title.

That link has always been under My Sites. The only change is that it now shows the actual site name instead of the words “View Site”

    @kokkieh,

That link has always been under My Sites.

Yes. I probably should I have mentioned that. The link to the front page of the site in which dashboard you were in used to appear under My Sites when you pointed the cursor at My Sites. Now it doesn’t.

You should be able to reach the home page by clicking on My Sites, and then clicking on the site title.

You are correct, sir! Thank you. Clicking on My Sites always took me to My Sites previously, so I didn’t even think to try that. : )

The only change is that it now shows the actual site name instead of the words “View Site”

Hadn’t that changed some weeks ago? This is a much more recent change — either yesterday or the day before.
Thanks, for all of your help!

  • Hadn’t that changed some weeks ago? This is a much more recent change — either yesterday or the day before.

The My Sites menu was changed early in December, but there haven’t been any new changes since then.

The link to the front page of the site in which dashboard you were in used to appear under My Sites when you pointed the cursor at My Sites. Now it doesn’t.

This is not something we changed. I can see the site link there from my main account and from various test accounts, and so can everyone else I’ve asked to check.

Can you please provide a screen shot of what appears if you click the My Sites tab while in your WP-Admin dashboard?

Can you please provide a screen shot of what appears if you click the My Sites tab while in your WP-Admin dashboard?

First of all, it’s odd that you would instruct me to click on the My Sites tab, because until yesterday, or possibly the day before, that was not the way to display a link to the site. Instead, for a long time — and I don’t recall it working otherwise — clicking on the My Sites tab from either the front or backend of any of my sites would take me to the Calypso interface, specifically the stats page of Calypso. I’ll get back to what it does now…

When I point at (or “hover over”) the My Sites tab here, in the forums, a drop-down menu with a black background appears. Here’s a screenshot: https://snag.gy/T8yhgI.jpg. This is the menu, or very much like the menu, that used to appear when I pointed at the My Sites tab when on one of my sites, either from the WP Admin dashboard or from the front end. Suddenly, yesterday that didn’t work anymore, hence this thread.

When I click on the My Sites tab here, in the forums, I’m taken to the My Sites page of the Calypso interface. That’s what used to happen when I clicked on My Sites from the WP Admin dashboard (backside) or the front side of any of my sites…until yesterday.

Since yesterday, the effect of pointing the cursor at the My Sites tab from WP Admin or front end of one of my sites is not the same is has been for the past couple of years or so, which was to display the menu with black background shown in the screenshot above, or something very similar. I’ve used this method virtually daily for the last year or two while running tests on various test sites that I use to investigate issues reported by others in the forums. Suddenly pointing the cursor at the My Sites tab had no effect, and I was left to find other means of getting to the front page of a site.

And now — also suddenly, and probably beginning yesterday, though I hadn’t realized it until you mentioned it — clicking on My Sites from WP Admin or the front end of the corresponding site displays a Calypso style menu with a baby blue background. Here’s a screenshot of the menu: https://snag.gy/boeZ2z.jpg. The content of the menu is similar to that of the other menu with the black background, though there are differences. Both menus include a site link.

The My Sites menu was changed early in December, but there haven’t been any new changes since then.

The change of the link from “view site” to the site title and URL happened in December, but that’s not what I’m referring to. Here’s a summary of the changes I’ve encountered since yesterday:

    1. While in the WP Admin dashboard of any one of my sites, or on any post or page of the front end of such a site, pointing the cursor at the My Sites tab has for perhaps the last two years displayed the black background menu with a link to the corresponding site. Suddenly, beginning yesterday, pointing the cursor at the My Sites tab from WP admin or the front end of the corresponding does nothing.

    2. Clicking on the My Sites tab from WP Admin or the front end of the corresponding site now displays the menu with the baby blue background, a Calypso style menu. That action never had this effect until yesterday. Previously, clicking on the My Sites tab from those locations would always bring you (or me at least) to the My Sites page of the Calypso interface.

Sorry about the length of that, Kokkieh. Editing down is not my forte. You can cut to the itemized list (1 and 2) to save a headache.

    Results on various browsers:

    1. The results described above were found while using the latest Firefox browser, version 50.1.0.

    2. The results described above are the same on the latest Google Chrome browser.

    3. On Internet Explorer, the My Sites tab works the same at WP Admin, and the front side of the corresponding site, as it does with Firefox and Google Chrome, but the My Sites tab doesn’t display in the dark gray toolbar at the top of a page when visiting the forums.

    4. With the Tor browser, neither pointing at nor clicking the My Sites tab displays the Calypso style blue menu while in WP Admin or on the front side of the corresponding site, and the dark gray toolbar that contains the My Sites tab doesn’t display at all in the forums.

I’m planning to start a separate topic soon regarding issues encountered when attempting to use the Tor browser on WordPress.com.

  • Okay. Because you have an older account the My Sites menu hadn’t been switched over to the new version for you yet. That’s why you could still hover over My Sites instead of needing to click it. This was rolled out gradually based on the age of your account. I’ve confirmed your account is now on the new version of the menu.

It looks like that change was shipped on Monday, which might explain why it didn’t work correctly for you this week – the older version of the menu might have still been cached in your browser.

On Internet Explorer…but the My Sites tab doesn’t display in the dark gray toolbar at the top of a page when visiting the forums.

Does it show the admin bar at all? The only time that bar shouldn’t appear is if you’re logged out of your account, and then it should be absent completely. If you’re logged in you should see the bar, with the My Site and Reader links on the left, and your profile picture on the right.

With the Tor browser, neither pointing at nor clicking the My Sites tab displays the Calypso style blue menu while in WP Admin or on the front side of the corresponding site, and the dark gray toolbar that contains the My Sites tab doesn’t display at all in the forums.

Those features use JavaScript to work, and TOR blocks JavaScript by default. There’s nothing we can do about that.

I’m planning to start a separate topic soon regarding issues encountered when attempting to use the Tor browser on WordPress.com.

You’re welcome to report any issues, but please keep in mind that we don’t officially support the TOR browser. The TOR browser blocks certain types of code, like JavaScript, which is what the entire My Sites dashboard, the admin bar, the action bar, and the majority of menus, post sliders and widgets are built with.

So none of those things will work on TOR, and there is no way we can make them work.

I reported it on Tuesday, Jan 10th. So Monday sounds right. When you responded on the 12th, I guess I forgot that it had been over a day since I reported it. So when I said “either yesterday or the day before” I should have said “either on the 10th or the day before that.”

[re: Internet Explorer] Does it show the admin bar at all?

Yes, on IE the admin bar shows, but there is no My Sites tab. It’s the latest version of IE, because I have it set on “Install new versions automatically.”

Thanks for the info regarding TOR. This makes it unnecessary to start a new topic. : )

Wherever I said “yesterday” in my posts here, I meant January 10th.

  • Yes, on IE the admin bar shows, but there is no My Sites tab.

Strange. It shows for me on IE11, but perhaps we’re looking at different pages? Can you give me the exact URL you’re looking at where you don’t see My Sites appear?

Just an additional note regarding TOR – you can of course enable JavaScript, and then most features should work, but JS and tracking cookies are disabled by default on the TOR browser, so it takes some extra steps to get things working.

If you’re concerned about your privacy while browsing the web (as we all should be these days), you could perhaps consider using a VPN for using WordPress.com instead.

The last couple of times I tried IE there was a blank spot in the gray toolbar where My Sites should have been, but it’s displaying today, and working the same is it does in FF and Chrome.

Thanks for that info on TOR, and VPN. I’ll look into these options. Have a nice weekend. : -)

  • I’m glad it’s working now. Might have been a caching issue.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend as well :)
