No longer able to edit content in Classic Block as HTML

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

For some reason I cannot edit the content of Classic Blocks anymore as html. This was possible before under the three dots menu. There is also no “edit” button in the toolbar.

This issue appears for two of my websites, they use different themes. A third website is fine. Deactivating plugins did not resolve this issue.

Can you help me with this?

I realize that this is likely due to the WordPress update to 6.9.

Both websites with the issue have been updated, whereas the third website that doesn’t have this issue has not been updated. The third website uses the same theme as one of the other two.

Is there any way to fix this?

It sounds like your sites aren’t hosted here at WordPress.com. Updates here are done for us. You’ll need to create an account and ask for advice at the .org support forum as things work slightly differently here.

Well, I do have a blog hosted on WordPress, and I noticed too that I can’t HTML-edit classic blocks anymore. Though the obvious answer is that WordPress hates the classic editor and does everything underhanded it can do to drive people toward their shitty Gutenberg editor. So the best answer is, look for alternatives to WordPress, because eventually they will just kill the classic editor in whatever form it still exists.

Thanks for bumping this. I’ve seen one other forum thread noting the same issue of no longer being able to edit the Classic Block as HTML.

Thanks a lot for sharing @justjennifer!

Good to know. So we’ll have to be patient and hope it comes back with the next update :-)

  • I will go ahead and mark this thread as resolved for now, as the next step is to wait for the upcoming release.

In the meantime, you can continue working by using the full page Code editor if you need to edit HTML directly, as explained here:

Hi there, it looks like the ability to edit the Classic Block as HTML is back.

It also looks like there’s been a change to how the Classic Block appears. If before it was inline with the Editor Workspace, it now appears as a pop-up window, at least on my test sites that previously had it inline.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, now it’s even worse than before, thanks for nothing.

Hey @entropypump FWIW-The pop-up window Classic Block has all the same toolbar functions as the previous inline one. Do you feel that something is missing in this iteration?

If you edit your content as HTML, has something changed or is missing? Thanks for your input.

Hey, I was probably a bit hasty. It seems like it’s all there, although I would have preferred that it would work like it did before, and not as a pop-up window, but at least I can edit the HTML now.

  • Hi everyone! Thanks for checking back in and for sharing the updates here.

I completely understand that the change in UI isn’t everyone’s preference, and we really appreciate you taking the time to share feedback and experiences. It’s helpful for the team to hear how these changes affect real workflows.
