No longer able to edit image size in text editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I add previously edited images to my blog using a URL. If the size hasn’t been exactly right, I’ve been able to edit width and height in the text editor.

    Today, that ability seems to have been stripped out. Is this a glitch, or a new “feature”?

    I can’t image any reason those attributes would no longer be shown. Yes, I can add them manually, and yes, I can edit them once I’ve done so, but still — it’s a terrible bother.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,
    Are you using the classic editor or are you using the new Beep Beep Boop editor? if it’s the latter then you cannot deactivate the new Beep Beep Boop editor but you do not have to use it. For locating the ways and means of accessing the legacy or classic pages for creating posts, editing posts, and viewing stats see here > Navigating the Classic WordPress.COM interface http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2015/04/05/navigating-the-classic-wordpress-com-interface/

    No, I’m using the classic editor. In the html for the image, the alt tag still is there, but the width and height attribute have disappeared.

    I just had a chat window pop up, and Pam said that it may be a bug. She’s going to report it to the developers. I told her I’d opened a thread here, and will wait to see what develops.

    I’ve managed to keep the classic editor and stats from the get-go. So nice. :)

    Nice to see you, too, TT. Thanks and happy day!

    I’m not using a mobile device, either. I’m a desktop sort.

    Well that’s strange. Stranger still is using the chat box for support and being told to post here too. Whatever is said in the support chatboxes does not get recorded into support forum threads and therefor does not become a user resource that we can all access.

    Most questions here are answered by Volunteers and have been answered by us. We know when to tage a thread with modlook. I really don’t get the point of having support chatboxes at all unless it’s simply to appease cell phone addicts who cannot or will not read and comprehend instructions that don’t fit into teen weeny boxes.

    If there are support Staff working today then why the heck are they not responding to modlook tagged threads here? There are pages of them.

    Why the heck are they answering chatbox questions that Volunteers could probably answer? I don’t get it. This labor force division It does make any sense to me.

    P.S. Of course I have I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

    I wasn’t told to post here by the chatbox support. I already had posted here, and gone back to my work. When the chatbox popped up, I simply asked my question of that person.

    She asked if I was using the mobile app to post. I said that I was using my desktop, and she said she’d pass on the info to the developers. I then told her I’d already posted here, and would wait for a response here.

    I can’t answer any of your other questions. The great irony is that I had begged for a way to disable the chat box, because it was popping up about fifty times an hour and driving me crazy. That seems to have been fixed now, but since I had a question today and it popped up — well, I made use of it. :)

    Aha! That’s also weird to me too.

    I too have begged to be shed of that pop-up that loads with every page load and makes me want to SCREAM!

    P.S. Maybe when Staff do respond here they can address my questions about this. In the meantime I wish you good health and much happiness.

    shoreacres–could you send me the URL of a post where you are having trouble editing the size of the photo? You should be able to select the image, click the pencil icon and edit the image size from the dialog box that opens, but it that’s not working for you, I’ll take a look.

    timethief–regarding your question about how we allocate our Happiness Engineer resources:

    We currently provide support through chat, private email, and public forums. Each of these channels has benefits and drawbacks. We’re always experimenting to bring you the best support possible.

    @lizthefair

    The benefits that may or may not exist when it comes to chatbox support are unknown to me. Prima facie the loss of the responses in support threads that the whole community can access and use to learn how help ourselves to become independent resourceful bloggers appear to outweigh whatever the benefits of chatbox support may be.

    Setting that aside, if I had a rocket launcher the annoying live support chatbox pop-up that loads every time a page load happens on my blog would be history. I surely hope the enabling use of that pop-up, which I have grown to hate, will become optional very soon and that the option to disable it is under development right now. Please make sure the developers are aware of my unhappiness with this unnecessary and annoying feature that lacks a disable the little !@$%! option.

    First, I had no idea that you could click that pencil to edit a photo. I’ve never used it, and to be frank, never have explored it.

    I did go in to see what the function had to offer, and the answer is “nothing.” It doesn’t show either width or height, and I couldn’t find any way to edit size there.

    But I wasn’t quite clear enough in my original question. Once I have an image inserted in a post, I can edit it as usual, using the text editor/html. The problem is that, when I insert an image via URL in a draft, the width/height no longer shows in the html. Instead of:

    <img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.varnishgal.com/grahamcrackerplain.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="250" />

    I get this:

    <img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.varnishgal.com/grahamcrackerplain.jpg" alt=" />

    At that point, I have to either insert a generic width/height, then edit, or go back to the image source to find its dimensions.

    It’s not the biggest thing in the world, since there is a workaround, but it seemed strange to me that such a basic attribute suddenly would go missing.

    Thanks so very much!

    Thanks for clarifying. Images that are inserted by URL rather than being uploaded to your media library are handled differently.

    The “pencil” method will help you change the size for images you’ve uploaded to your library, but for cases like the one you describe, your workaround is the best option.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am still curious why the change was made. Until two days ago, width and height were included in the URL upload. Was there a particular reason to eliminate that?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I looked at this more closely and the inclusion of the image size info depends on where you are pulling the image URL from. If you are using an image that had info included in it when you capture the link it will be included on your site. If you use an image url that doesn’t include the data to start with, you’ll have to add it yourself.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Aha! That makes sense.
