No longer able to open url linked photos in lightbox

my website is http://www.fortheworkshop.com and let’s use this post as an example (though my issues are site-wide):

    https://www.fortheworkshop.com/how-to-install-the-blackvue-dr900x-2ch-uhd-4k-dashcam/

Since the very beginning I have always kept my photo albums within OneDrive. When I create a post and insert a photo, it is always embedded via a URL. Yes, I get the argument that there may be better sites, however, at this point, I am so vested into it, I have literally thousands of photos linked this way throughout my website. Simply too many to load directly into my WordPress gallery.

Early on I was able to use various plugins (many different ones) to allow me to open the photos on my site inside a lightbox. Well somewhere along the line this feature stopped working. I can no longer open them in a lightbox, they immediately download instead.

I have scoured the various settings within the theme builder I am using (Colibri Pro), I have tried every single lightbox plugin. I have contacted each plug-in developer and my theme developer but everyone is pointing fingers at each other. The theme developer keeps saying its cause by the plug-ins, the plug-ins are blaming the theme developer.

I’ve gone so far as disable every plug-in and it still behaves this way. I’ve also turned off the theme and switched to another theme (twenty-twenty) and the behavior is the same.

Nothing I do will change this behavior.

My gut feeling is that somewhere along the line the actual WordPress – OneDrive functionality broke or changed. I don’t know what and I don’t know enough about this to even speak on it intelligently, all I know is…it worked once, now it doesn’t (this has been an issue I have bee trying to resolve for over a year now).

I also created a test page (https://www.fortheworkshop.com/test-page/) and loaded an image onto my Google Drive, to see if this issue was only with OneDrive. I am unable to open an image in a lightbox (went through about 5 or 6 plugins) using images embedded via Google Drive as well. However, when clicking on GD images, the image does open in the web-browser as opposed to going straight to download.

However, when loading an image directly into my WordPress gallery, the lightbox functions properly. Is there now an issue opening embedded photos within a lightbox? I swear this worked when I first started my website.

Can any WordPress geniuses help out here? Is there simply a plugin that I haven’t tried yet that will allow for embedded images to be manipulated the same as images loaded right into the WordPress gallery?

  • Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you have trouble with your website. However, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with Bluehost.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is an excellent resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.
