No longer able to show a list of external links via Widgets?

I submitted a help ticket, but alas… nothing.

WordPress.com provides a whole section in the CMS entitled “Links.” In this section, I’ve compiled a large collection of links, which are then categorized, and have been displayed as a resource for visitors for many, many years. The backend CMS continues to display this “Links” section, yet no widget mechanism exists to display ANY of them (as of last week). POOF. The link list widget is gone. I am curious if I have missed something… is this a forever thing? Is there a workaround? Why have a links section in the CMS if it is completely useless now? This may be a dealbreaker for me… I may need to find a different solution for my site.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I see that I can create a workaround by manually recreating every link as a custom link in the menus section. This is rather ridiculous.

This bugs the heck out of me because the blogroll was there until at least October 2. https://web.archive.org/web/20241002204210/https://christmasunderground.com/

  • Hello @lostsides

Thank you for getting in touch. I can imagine this was certainly a surprise. We offer a List Block as a replacement for the legacy widget that you seem to have been using and that you could use for the lists of links you previously had on the site.

I have received your email, too, and will respond to you directly by email. I was able to extract your links from the archived version of your site.

Hi Paul. You are a lifesaver. That worked. Still not quite sure why such a simple widget would be discontinued… but that certainly works.

  • The legacy widgets are being replaced by blocks that you can use in both the regular block editor as well as block-powered sidebars in classic themes that support this.
