No longer possible to use classic editor?
-
When the extremely unintuitive, un-user-friendly, MailChimp-esque “blocks” were introduced a few months ago I found some workaround buried in the user control panel and favourited it on my browser toolbar so I could simply go directly there when posting; that now takes me to the same new block editor, which, if you can’t tell, I despise.
Are there any other workarounds? Any Firefox plugins, or anything like that? And if there are, are they likely to simply be removed in the future anyway – should I just jump ship to Blogspot or whatever the competitors are these days? (This would be my instinctive choice if it weren’t for 13 years of blog posts and book reviews that I’ve built up here at WordPress.)

You still have the Classic Block which is the Classic Editor as a block, https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

You can still switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/
With that said, we do recommend the new editor though, and we have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Hi there, just responding to this:
I found some workaround buried in the user control panel and favourited it on my browser toolbar
If you now go to the WP Admin dashboard at yoursite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and then click on the link to the Posts or Pages dashboard (not Add New Post or Add New Page in the sidebar), at the top of that dashboard you’ll see a button to add a New Post with an arrow on the right of the button. Click that arrow and you’ll see the option to create a new post with the Classic Editor.
However, while the original Classic WP Editor is now available for everyone in WP Admin, just be aware that it is likely a temporary solution since it is via the Classic Editor plugin that WPcom installed for us. We users do not know how long that option will be available here as the plugin itself will be officially maintained until the end of 2021.
So if you choose to write in WP Admin’s Classic editor, I encourage you to open up a test post or page and start dabbling in the Classic block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/ or the full Block Editor https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/ The more you use it, the easier it will become and you’ll be ahead of the game when the Classic Editor is finally retired.
Post back here if you have other questions or need more help with this.

Thanks Jennifer – that works great. Happy to continue using a simple interface and kick the can down the road until the end of 2021.
