No more Preview for Themes?
-
I was looking through the new themes, and noticed that they no longer have a Preview button – when hovering over them all that is available is “Use this Theme” or “Live Demo”. The live demo is as usual, showing all the options, etc, and certainly the more important, but when looking through themes I found it very helpful to be able to see a Preview that showed my own posts (and images, etc) in that theme.
Granted, not everything showed up, often the header was missing (wrong size anyway) and the background was changed, etc, but it still gave me an idea of what my posts would look like, their size, my photos, etc.
Is that feature to preview now gone forever? Is the only way to see how it will look be to choose “Use this Theme”? I have not tried that button, because I am not ready to commit to a change, only to find out it might not be right for me, and then have to switch back and reformat the old one.
Is there something I am not understanding, or did you simply remove that Preview feature?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I can’t remember if there was a Preview button in the themes listed in the Theme Directory (http://theme.wordpress.com/).
But you can always preview the themes from your Dashboard > Appearance > Themes page. Have you checked it?
-
Thanks for the reply. :)
Yes, there used to be a preview button on each of the themes in the Theme Directory. I used it often, to get an idea of what my text and images would look like. It wasn’t perfect, but it was helpful. Apparently they have changed that, on the main themes page.
However, you are right, going into the Themes through the individual blog dashboard does allow me to see the previews. Thanks so much for the tip! I was confused because I usually just looked in the Theme sections without going through the blog.
Thanks again for helping! :)

PS – I just realized why i was confused. This does not show up on the new dashboard, only on the older, Classic dashboard.
The new dashboard does not have an Appearance link instead what I am seeing is a section called Look and Feel, under which is a link to Themes – but those will not show a preview. To see the preview function I have to use the Classic Dashboard.
Is there a way to make the Classic Dashboard the default?

There is no switch to flick to make the classic dashboard as a default but you can always click on Classic Dashboard link on the left hand side menu beneath the View Site link :-)

I hesitate to give this information, as I have elsewhere in the support forum recently, due to the fear that the option might soon be removed. Logging in at the following page will take you directly to the classic dashboard. I’ve used it for years.
https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php? (with or without the question mark)

I thought you might say that. Very odd and interesting that the same link takes us to different pages.
-
I should say logging in from same page takes us to different pages. Does it matter whether you use your username or email address?
-
I logged in earlier with username and now with email id. I still ended up on the Reader page.

https://songbook1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ is what takes you to classic dashboard, as I see rachelmcr’s answer on this thread. It worked :-)
allwaysjudee – Please use http://allwaysjudee.wordpress.com/wp-admin to land in the classic dashboard :-)
-
Alright, thanks. I’ll try that. But I promise you that https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php? takes me to the classic dashboard unfailingly, and has done so for several years.
-
Had no idea at first what the recent “Mass Changes” talk was all about, because it was smooth sailing as usual here.

staff-happychia,
The login you’ve suggested, https://songbook1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/, does take me to the classic dashboard. However, before it does so the URL redirects to https://songbook1.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fsongbook1.wordpress.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1, for unknown reasons.
Not as elegant as the one I’ve been using, which doesn’t redirect. -
Also, when I used the one you’ve suggested the session expired within a couple or three minutes. Whereas I not infrequently stay logged in for days.

Thanks all for the help and input. :)
chaitanyamsv that link worked perfectly, thanks.
As I think about it, though, since I have several blogs, I think simply clicking on the Classic Dashboard will be good enough, my main problem was getting the theme previews to show, and that works – I just hope they don’t change things again and remove it. ;)

I’d just like to add that the preview option is especially important for anyone who pays for an upgrade with custom design, especially those of us who would be doing CSS edits. Preview allows the seamless transition between between two layouts that take longer to develop and troubleshoot.
