No notification about domain expiration: remitting extra fee?
-
Hello,
We are an education organisation running a course. One of our previous mentors have originally bought a domain but we just found out it got expired. None of us (other active mentors / site admins) got any notification about this – spam checked. We found out about the expiration today when we visited the site after a little pause in updates.
WordPress suggested to pay 18 € for domain mapping/registration and 80 € late fee, which sounds truly unfair. Can it be revoked? Is there other way to restore the domain? Of course we wouldn’t mind paying the annual fee as usual.
Thank you!

Hi @sokerirulla,
Domain expiration is a bit of a complicated process. If you’d like, you can read more about it here:
A few weeks after a domain expires, we’re charged a redemption fee by the registrar in order to renew the domain (so we’re charged this $80 fee by the registrar). As a result, I’m afraid we cannot waive the late fee.
In order to renew the domain, you would need to login as the domain upgrade owner (the domain isn’t owned by sokerirulla). If you have access to the account, you can renew it under Store -> My Upgrades from your Dashboard.
Alternatively, if you would like, you can let the domain expire fully (usually takes a total of 80-90 days) and then try registering it again for the normal cost. During this time, the domain might be sold to someone else on backorder, however.
