No Permalinks

I’m trying to make a website using the free domain and no subscription. I’ve watched a video on how to create a website, which was made in June 2020. The video shows the wp-admin screen with significantly more buttons and options than me. Also, the video shows that there is a permalinks tab, although no matter where I look, there is no permalinks tab.

The video I watched was using the wordpress.com (which is what I’m using) instead of wordpress.org. The only difference between me and the video is: I don’t have a premium membership with wordpress, and I don’t have a custom domain through Hostgator.

I really need some help, because there are no other good tutorials out there!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t have access to the permalinks as your site is on the Free Plan. If you want a custom permalink structure, you must upgrade to the Business Plan, https://wordpress.com/support/permalinks-and-slugs/

    Thanks.

The whole reason I wanted to find it is to have only words in the URL and have the URL in subject folders, e.g. yourwebsite.wordpress.com/contact/ instead of yourwebsite.com/?72e&3/jud7 (or something like that).

Hi there, the video you watched may have been for the standalone WordPress open source software which has different configuration options. WPcom (where we are ) and WP are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. More information about the differences can be found here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

To change your free WordPress.com site address to another free address (if it isn’t already taken), you can follow this guide https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/ Once you change it you won’t be able to change it back.

Post back here if you have more questions.

Also, if you are looking for tutorials for sites hosted here, besides the ones in the Support site, WordPress.com runs webinars on a host of subjects. https://wordpress.com/webinars/

If I want to change to wordpress.org later on when I want to invest money, can I easily copy and paste the website into the installed WordPress? Or do I have to start from scratch when I change over? Either way, is it worth it to change over to have a cheaper domain name or should I just stay with wordpress.com?

Hi there, you can grow your site here on WordPress.com and upgrade according to your needs. The Pricing page includes an outline of the features available with each plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If at a later time you decide you want to set up a site using the WordPress open source software, you’ll be able to export your content from your WPcom site. Here’s more information on exporting: https://wordpress.com/support/export/

If you didn’t look the first time, take a look at the guide on the differences between WPcom and WP that I linked to earlier: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

Post back here if you have other questions.

Sorry, one last question. I’ve been watching tutorials to make my site and they are mentioning something called Elementor. I’ve found out that you need a business plan or higher to get the plugin. What is the thing that you use to change your site design, is it easy to use? Is it as customisable as Elementor?

Hello again, WordPress.com is a hosting provider that brings you the WordPress experience in a easier to use interface. You add your content and WPcom handles the hosting and all the backend software updates and security. All WPcom sites come pre-installed with a base theme that you can change to any of the themes in the Theme Showcase (free or premium), and which you can customize using Custom colors, custom fonts, widgets, Custom CSS (available in the Premium plans and above). To customize a WPcom website, you’d use the Customizer, which is also used in the standalone WP software.

Elementor is a page and site builder plugin that you can install on a WPcom business or ecommerce site or the standalone WP software on 3rd party hosting and, while popular, it is not the only page builder plugin. Since I’ve never used their plugin, I’d suggest looking at their website and/or forums for more information about what Elementor is capable of doing.

Since WPcom starts at the free tier, why not start with a free test site? There is a tutorial that can help you get up and running at https://wordpress.com/learn as well as our support site and our community forums for questions.

    Hope that helps.
