No photo when posted to topics

I’m getting the hang of posting and creating the blog as I want it. I noticed this morning when I posted it showed up right away in the travel topic, as I had tagged it. But it was just text. Most posts I see have a photo. Is the featured photo not used? How do I get a photo included when it is posted in the various topics? Thank you. Liking word press so far.
