No Post Titles in Category Widget
-
Because I put title names of articles directly in images, I don’t create a title for each post. No need for double titles and it also saves some spacing. (I have my reasons for this)
But if one would click on a catergory in the category widget, a list with no titles appears (obviously).
My question is, is there a way to still have corresponding post titles show up there apart from the obvious entering a title name when creating a post.my blog that needs help: http://tpata.wordpress.com/
a category page where you can see the problem: http://tpata.wordpress.com/2009/11/
Thanks in advance!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I could comment on whether or not that’s a good idea, but since you seem set on it, I won’t.
There is unfortunately NO way around this Category/Archives blowback. It’ll be like that as long as you don’t use the Title field. You can use a theme that shows an excerpt as well as a title, and then the text will show, but not the images.
-
Images can be included in excerpts. While using the HTML editor, paste the image code into the excerpt box. You can also have background colors, borders, links and so on in the excerpts.
Unfortunately there are only a very few themes where the excerpt function works for the main posts page, as well as for the archives and categories pages.

This is mostly not useful for the original poster, but others may find it useful informatin. I use a theme where excerpts work in archives and category pages if you want to see how they look.

You can hide the title with your image. You may have to experiment with the numbers for position:relative, top, and left.
<div style="height:128px;position:relative;top:-60px;left:-1px;z-index:1;background:#ffffff;color:#000000;width:100%;"><table style="background:#ffffff;width:500px;" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td><a href="IMAGE_LINKED_TO_POST_HEIGHT_IS_EQUAL TO_HEIGHT_OF_DIV_ABOVE" /></a></td> </tr> </tbody></table> </div> CONTENT_OF_YOUR_POSTI’m not sure what search engines think of hidden text?
Also, you probably want to add titles but leave perma-links alone if search engines have already indexed your posts. -
Also, this looks ok in Safari and Firefox.
My latest Explorer is version 5, so who knows what it looks like there. -
This is closer to right:
<div style="height:128px;position:relative;top:-117px;left:-1px;z-index:1;width:100%;"><table style="background:#ffffff;width:600px;" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td><a href="IMAGE_LINKED_TO_POST_HEIGHT_IS_EQUAL TO_HEIGHT_OF_DIV_ABOVE" /></a></td> </tr> </tbody></table></div> CONTENT_OF_YOUR_POSTWith more tinkering, you may be able to hide only the title and leave the invitation to comment and the date visible.

Thanks 1Tess!
hmm..I read the stuff on your page and I understand it only works with some themes only. I’m using the Vigilance theme and I read in your “Full posts or not in category or archive pages” post that the Vigilance theme falls into the only Titles category. But I guess that’s only if I filled in the Title in the first place right…? -
Right. If you don’t fill in the title, then there is nothing to show.
(by the way, the link is not to my blog

It is written by panaghiotisadam)Excerpts would show on the category pages—but the number that would be visible is equal to the number of posts you allow on your front page. And you would have to change themes in order for that to work. Category widget would still show no titles if you haven’t written them.
-
Ahh sorry for the mix up :)
Yea I thought so, that’s just the problem I’m looking to solve since I don’t want to fill in a title.
hmm… -
(No chance of a real mix-up: I could never write such an excellent blog as his!)
This is simpler; I was trying to cover the title with your image, but if you just cover it with a white cell in a table, white text…
This might work:<div style="height:18px;position:relative;top:-117px;left:-1px;z-index:1;width:100%;"> <table style="background:#ffffff none repeat scroll 0 0;width:600px;" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td><span style="color:#ffffff;">HIDDEN_TITLE_HERE</span> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> </div>Then you could fill in the title but it would be hidden. For a 2-line title, adjust the height.
-
Ugh. I switched for a second to the visual editor and it added that nonsense about scroll. It’s annoying.
<div style="height:18px;position:relative;top:-117px;left:-1px;z-index:1;width:100%;"> <table style="background:#ffffff;width:600px;" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td><span style="color:#ffffff;">HIDDEN_TITLE_HERE</span> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> </div> -
Ah I get you, sorry I’m a bit slow today, must be a weather thing hehe.
You’re talking about covering up the title, should that line of code go into the excerpt or in the actual post html editor?
Need to be experimenting with it I guess.Yea I also think its annoying that sometimes when you switch between editors, some things get left out or changes certain things. Really odd.
On a side note, that pink steamed chicken breast with spagetti looks delicious!! Btw, that Kimizu sauce, doesn’t it need oil like mayonaise?
-
Put the code into the regular html editor. If you like this solution, you’ll have to add it to each post. But you can keep a copy-paste file so it’s not difficult.
I don’t think you could do the hiding with CSS, but I don’t have any experience with it.
The steamed chicken is always nice/ the kimizu sauce has no oil.
It’s maybe sweeter than people not familiar with Japanese food would like so if you try it, cut the sugar. A little dried mustard powder is really good in it.
