No proof of ownership
-
Hi,
I’m trying to help the organizers of a university colloquium, whose WordPress.com site was originally set up by a grad student who has since left the university, so they have no proof of ownership of their WordPress.com site, but they are definitely the organizers of the colloquium. Is there any way for them to regain access to their account? If not, I will set up a new account and URL for them, but in that case, is there a way to put a redirect on their old WP site?
(This form won’t let me enter the actual URL of the blog in question in the field below, which shows my own URL, not the colloquium website I’m inquiring about.)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Dear bestdashlight,
This site is mostly answered by member volunteers. In order to receive help from staff you must tag your question with “modlook”; which I will do for you at this time or you can reach support at:

There is one and only one means of account recovery https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/ and appealing to Support Staff outside of the account recovery process is a useless exercise.
Every WordPress.COM blog has a sole owner. It is the person with the WordPress.COM username account who registered the blog under that username account and a single associated email address, and who is the original Admin of the blogs registered under that username account.
You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard.
Clicking this link should display all blogs registered under the same username, including the hidden ones: https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs&show=hidden
If you do not see the blog here http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/ then
follow this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#my-blogs-dashboard-visibilityIf the log-in information is lost visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
If you are not successful gaining access to the blog then please complete the form for account recovery at this link https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery and submit it to the Account Recovery Staff so they can contact you by email ie. not on these public support forums which are available to everyone with internet access.

Thank you for your help timethief. Unfortunately the account recovery form does not allow submission without a proof of ownership, which my client does not have.

@toniaslimm
In fact some of us we regular Volunteers predate Staff and some Support Staff members began as Volunteers. I have answered questions here for over 9 years (nearly 10) and have no interest in becoming a Staff member. When I began there was a single Staff member on Support and no support documentation. Please do not direct anyone with account recovery issues to contact Support Staff by email as only Account Recovery Staff can assist them. If you refer them as you did above they simply end up delayed and feeling frustrated. They have to use the account recovery process as there is no way around it. -
@bestdashlight
That’s understood. Please be clear on the fact that proof of ownership is required. You have reached a dead end if you cannot contact the site’s actual owner directly on your own. Staff cannot and will not provide the email address of the username account that registered the site because doing so would be a breach of privacy policy. -
Hi @bestdashlight, without any proof of ownership, we really can’t do much to the account. Otherwise we’d have people messing around with each other’s sites all the time.
Are you able to get in touch with the person who set it up? If you can, we can work with them to get it transferred to a new owner.

Thanks very much @supernovia. They can’t reach the person who set it up for them originally, so instead, we’ll set up a new account with a new URL, and once I transfer the contents over, WordPress support told me that they’ll set the old site to Private, which is a good solution for everyone.
I appreciate everyone’s help, both on this forum and in emails from WP.com support staff. Marking this resolved; see you online :-)

Oops, didn’t realize until after I hit “Submit” that I wrote the comment above while signed in with the new account. @supernovia, the above was from @bestdashlight, not @yodzis. Must find coffee :-)
