I started a new wordpress.com blog today. Discovered that there is no proofreading button. What do I need?

You are most likely using the new editor. Proofread button is not yet available in it.
You can however use proofread your posts from the WP-Admin also known as the old dashboard.
Write your post in the new editor and save the draft.
Go to Posts page in the WP-Admin at http://edwardsks.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php
Move the mouse over the title of the draft and click Edit button.
Click on Proofread Writing button to proof read your post.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I’m not very tech-savvy, but thanks to the explanation, I found that mthe edit function was back and worked successfully. Is it possible for me to get out of the ‘new editor’ (I didn’t know I was in it) and use the ‘old dashboard’?
I have a long-term WP blog, but started this second one, thinking it would be a dottle getting it set up and running well. Wrong! -
The old editor is also known as WP-Admin. This can be accessed by visiting this link: http://edwardsks.wordpress.com/wp-admin
Alternatively, you can also click on the WP Admin link at the end of the menu options in the new editor: https://cloudup.com/crMfcYwow5q
