No reply link on a comment someone made
-
Hi,
I started noticing this the other day. Someone leaves a reply to an entry on my blog and I can reply to it once. If they choose to reply to my reply and post it, I don’t see a “Reply” link on that newest comment.
See this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/gmqYdab.png
I have to go to my dashboard and click on reply there to be able to post something.
Why is it doing this? I can’t find any reason as to why it wouldn’t let me reply to a comment on my own blog.
Any help appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello.
Will you please check your discussion settings > Settings > Discussion Settings and let us know if you have enabled threaded (nested) comments or not and if so how many levels deep please?Enable threaded (nested) comments __ levels deep- Turn on this option to allow visitors to reply to other comments inline/nested. When turned on it can allow for better discussions and responses. We suggest using a maximum of 3 levels deep. Anything higher and the theme layouts may not work as expected. Note: Enabling the setting only applies to new comments since existing comments don’t have any threading date. However, disabling this setting applies to all comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
Please tell us:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
(b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
(c) And what any error reports you receive state. -
My settings are set to enable threaded comments, 3 levels deep.
(a) Desktop (Windows)
(b) Chrome Version 31.0.1650.57 m
(c) I receive no errors, I just don’t see a reply button on the 3rd comment where there should be one. -
Hi there,
The screenshot you posted shows 3 levels of comments: The first comment (level 1) and two replies (levels 2 and 3). You can enable additional replies by allowing threaded comments to be 4 or more levels deep.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

@rachelmcr
That did fix it, thank you. I am however stunned that this feature is so… well, I have no nice words for it. Efficient isn’t a word I’d use here.Threading comments should be a display option and not hinder *function*. Disabling the ability to reply to a comment just because it can’t be nested past the set level seems like a really big design flaw to me and makes no sense. I should still be able to reply to a comment even if it can’t be nested further by just placing it directly beneath the last nested comment.
That’s how threaded comments work everywhere else on the internet. I can’t believe WordPress really inhibits function so much with such a poorly thought-through idea.
But I guess it was implemented for some unknown reason I won’t understand.
Rant aside, the problem is solved. I thank you all for your assistance!

You’re welcome!
Comment threading is something that’s actually part of the WordPress software that WordPress.com runs on. WordPress is developed by a community (the software is open source), so if this is a feature that you think could be improved you might want to jump in and suggest that at WordPress.org. :)
You can learn more about the threaded comments feature or find out how you can get involved here: http://make.wordpress.org/
