No Returns and breaks when creating a post

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I could use some help (yes, again!). I have searched the forums but haven’t found anything concrete to help me. I use the wordpress free blog and when I create a post, either using the visual or text mode, my returns / breaks will not show up in my actual post. I have tried simply hitting enter and I have tried the HTML break tags and
neither work and since I am on the free site I can’t use the plugins suggested. Can someone tell me what I need to do? I need to be able to put breaks in my posts. Thanks!

Are you typing posts directly into the Write Post box, or are you pasting them in?

I’ve tried both and neither will retain my returns

If your post is in the Paragraph format, it will retain returns as double spaced. Can you look and confirm that your original posts are in Paragraph format (on the extended format bar on the Visual Editor)?

Sorry for the late reply. I had family issues. I have them in Paragraph format but even when I double or even triple space they disappear. I tried PREformatted format and it seemed to stay when switching from visual to text and back to visual. Can you explain what PREformatted means, please, and whether I need to use that format? Thanks!

The preformatted function ALMOST worked. It kept my spaces but it put the very first picture align on the left with wrap around text in a scrolling box. Only the first line of text, though. The rest of the page was fine except the rest of the text that was supposed to wrap around the pic was placed under the scrolling box. I placed another pic below that with wrap around text and it looked great. Any ideas?

    a) Forget pre: it creates more problems than it solves.

    b) Please link to or point to a specific post you’re having trouble with.

    c) Some of your posts are formatted correctly, but in some posts part of the content is divs instead of paragraphs. Divs don’t have a default bottom space like paragraphs have.

    d) That part of the content is full of wrong code like this:
    <div style="text-align:center;"> </div>
Did you copypaste the content from another source into the Visual editor, or did you add such pieces of code yourself in the Text editor?

OK I have no idea what was going on but I just tried a sample post and it worked fine using the paragraph format. Maybe it was just me being a novice. LOL But when I switch from visual to text and back to visual my spaces are gone but when I preview it is right. I think that was the problem. I was seeing it revert after I went to text mode and not checking the actual preview. Sorry for wasting your time but I do thank you for helping. :)

Hopefully, what I post will help you. Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see here please http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.

When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2

If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.
