No thumbnail when sharing on Facebook a blog post containing only a vimeo video
-
When sharing a post that includes only an embedded vimeo video and no images, Facebook does not display a thumbnail from the video and instead displays the generic WordPress icon.
According to Facebook’s Open Graph Object Debugger the og:image tag is missing.

Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.
If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.
The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

Thank you.
The post is a Standard post and I’ve already tested it using Facebook’s Debug tools.
The og:image meta tag is missing from the post, preventing Facebook from displaying it correctly. When embedding a Youtube video the meta tag is not missing. The post and video are displayed correctly in the Reader: https://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/40076016/
For some reason Facebook does not share the post as a video (even though the og:video meta tag IS defined), and because the og:image tag is missing no replacement image is displayed. -

Hi there,
WordPress.com will look for a video screenshot for embedded videos, and for example for videos that come from YouTube or VideoPress we’re able to get that screenshot and add it to the post as the og:image.
Right now, WordPress.com doesn’t have a way to grab the screenshot from other services like Vimeo — for now, it’s best to specifically add an image to your post (or as a featured image) if you’d like to include that. However, I’ll also pass this suggestion along to our team to see if they can add support for getting screenshots from Vimeo, as well.
