No trackback module

I have spent an embarrassing number of hours trying to get trackbacks to work (specifically to the arXiv, which I know supports them; see https://arxiv.org/help/trackback). However, simply adding the appropriate trackback URL does not work; instead I get directed to this error page: https://arxiv.org/sciencewise
From what I’ve been able to learn, WordPress does not auto-detect and send trackbacks as I’d originally thought. Rather, these must be added manually via the ‘Trackback Module’, according to the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/trackbacks/
However, I cannot find this elusive ‘Trackback Module’ anywhere! Can someone please clarify where this is located? The Support page above is not very clear on this, and I don’t see it on any of the admin or editor pages.

Hi @irreverentmind, I think this setting may only be available for now in the wp-admin editor. Can you confirm?

You may need to opt to use the classic editor, using the three dots in the upper right.
Then, the trackbacks module will *most likely* be there, but if not, can you double check Screen Options at the top to ensure it’s checked there?
Sorry if this sounds convoluted! But hopefully it helps. And if this is indeed the issue, we’ll make note going forward.

Thanks so much for your reply, and my apologies for the delay. I did manage to find and add the trackback module via the admin page, thank you.
However, I have now sent several trackbacks via the module, but the arXiv administrators just confirmed that they never received any. Could you confirm whether the instructions below are accurate?

The instructions for sending trackbacks _from_ WordPress are correct, but I can’t comment as to the receiving end with arXiv.
It’s possible the URL structure may not be 100% accurate, or there may be some blocking or rate limiting on that end.

Well, in that case I’m at an impasse: arXiv insists that their end is solid, and that I should simply follow the WordPress instructions. But they’re still not receiving any trackback requests.
Has anyone else experienced problems with this?

I’ve not seen anyone else with a similar report. I will follow up with the rest of my team to be sure.
It won’t hurt to rule out a browser issue on your end, though.
– Do you have better luck using a different browser?
– Does the behavior improve if you clear your cache?
– Disable any additional browser extensions that are in use. -
I don’t know how to attach screenshots here, but the module does have a correct list of websites under “Already pinged”, so the issue can’t be local (tried two different computers, with different operating systems, with cleared caches etc).
I’ve sent another message to the arXiv admins, with a screenshot showing that trackbacks have indeed been sent as per instructions—assuming the report in the trackback module can be believed.

Oh! Thanks darnelldibbles, I uploaded the screenshot to my media library. Let me know if this loos obviously wrong, or I’m misinterpreting what “already pinged” means.
arXiv has been conspicuously silent, but apparently they’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties. :$

P.s. I tried sending trackbacks to both the “trackback” URL arXiv specifies in their instructions, as well as to the abstract page directly in case said instructions were misleading, which is why you see the same paper ID number in two different URLs.
