no way to add paypal donate button to my blog
-
I want to add a paypal donate button to my wordpress.com free blog, self-hosted. I have followed all directions I can find, (so many options) but NONE of the directions can be matched to my blog: there is no paypal widget listed. I got a ‘code’ from paypal, but cannot edit HTML code.
If I can’t have a donate button on my blog, I wish someone would tell me so I don’t waste any more time!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you following the instructions listed here?:
-
The “code” I got from paypal is HUNDREDS of lines long – nothing like the instructions at URL you supplied.
-
Paste in the code PayPal gave you by clicking the Text tab in your page editor instead of the visual tab, see https://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/

Ah this doens’t work because WordPress.com blogs don’t support the form tag, that’s why it’s showing up blank https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
You’ll need to pay for a web host and install WordPress and you’ll be able to paste in the code no problem.
WordPress.com does this because you could run a business from a free blog and that would be crazy.
I personally use dreamhost.com and have hosted with them since 2007 and they’re great. Godaddy works too.

See- this is my complaint: Why doesn’t wordpress tell you this kind of thing up front? I have wasted SO MUCH TIME on this and other problems: I’m not going to reconstruct my entire 100+ posts on another site just to get a donate button. And wordpress has already told me, after another wasted journey, that I can’t migrate my site to an upgrade: I have to start ALL OVER AGAIN. Ridiculous!
-
No you don’t have to start over. While your theme might be different you can easily export all the 100+ posts + pages you’ve written. See https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
Unfortunately I know it’s easy to do it yourself but with websites it’s really not that easy. I build websites for a living and my clients run into this daily. So don’t feel disheartened.
Stay positive and people like me (or me) will help you get going!

Thanks for your replies: I’m not disheartened but frustrated. I actually have 1000+ posts and starting over (or messing things up) isn’t appealing. I’ve developed a “phobia” over the word “easy” – it never is!

At the top of this post lucank gave you a link. Did you follow the instructions very carefully and get the email from PayPal because those instructions say:-
“Believe it or not, you do not want the code for websites! WordPress.com does not let users post web forms so the website code would be stripped. You must use the link provided in the Email tab. This is the link that you’ll be attaching to your button image”.

Thanks, but I’m out of patience at this moment… too many obstacles doing anything online anymore – I’m a “simple” person. LOL
