no way to add user w/o wordpress account?

I am a teacher wanting to add students as users. My friend, another teacher, started her wordpress blog as recently as May and on her users page there was a place for her students to simply type in a username and password, rather than registering with wordpress first. The ONLY differences between our blogs (beyond theme) is that hers is privately hosted. Is that what is making the difference? Was WordPress still registering them, but have added the “invite” feature now instead? I’d like this to be as simple as possible as a beginner in the classroom 2.0 world, but don’t want to just limit my students to comments. Suggestions/Explanations?
    Thanks…

  • With a self-hosted WordPress blog, you can add users directly to the blog, but here on WordPress.com all users need an actual account with us first.
