No way to transfer an expired domain?

Hello,
I let my domain expire, because I wanted to transfer it to Wix instead. But now it won’t let me.
Do I have to renew my domain with wordpress FIRST, before I am allowed to transfer it over to Wix? Won’t I have to pay double? Please help! I don’t want to lose my domain.

Hi Michelle,
Once your domain registration expires, you don’t have ownership of that domain name anymore. That means you can’t use it or transfer it anywhere else. We have more information about what happens when a domain expires here: Domain Expiration
If you’d like to keep ownership of your domain name, you’ll need to renew it first or let it expire completely and try to register it again with Wix. However, we don’t recommend letting your domain completely expire, because the expiration process takes a while and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to register it again later. (There’s always a chance someone else will grab it first.) You can renew your domain now by going to Store > My Upgrades in your dashboard.
If you renew your domain here at WordPress.com and then transfer it to another domain registrar, you won’t lose the domain registration you paid for — it will just be transferred to the new registrar. So if you pay for another year of domain registration here, you’ll still have that year if you transfer the domain somewhere else. So you’re saying I needed to transfer it before it expired? I guess I was confused. I thought it NEEDED to expire, before I was allowed to transfer it.
I understand now that I need to repurchase it from wordpress before I will be allowed to transfer it to another registrar. I don’t suppose there is any way to override the late charge just this once? I realize my ignorance is my own fault, but it was an honest mistake. I thought I was going about it the right way, and only discovered too late that it was wrong.

There’s a short grace period right after a domain expires when you can still transfer and renew it as usual. After that, you don’t own the domain name anymore and can’t transfer it. (Your ownership of the domain only lasts as long as you have it registered with a domain registrar.)
