When a domain expires, it then goes through a process that can take several months to complete described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/.
If you are in the grace period you will not have to agree to pay a redemption fee set by the domain name registrar that wordpress.COM staff cannot waive.
Otherwise, if you want Staff to try to recover the domain for you then you will have to agree to pay the redemption fee.
If you’re logged into the account that is associated with your expired domain, they will look up its status and get in touch with details.
If you are not logged in under the correct username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into the associated account, and provide the domain URL here.

Hi – the registration of coastalcruiseplanner.com expired on October 5th 2017. The $50 renewal you paid was for the G Suite email service connected to that domain, but the domain was not renewed.
It has since entered in to redemption. I will need the help of our domain partner to recover this domain now. To do that, they’ll charge an $80 fee. Before we continue I need to confirm that you’ll agree to that payment.

G Suite (formerly Google Apps) is what you are using for your custom email address. This was bought last year when you registered the domain and upgraded your plan. The purchase price was $149 ($50 for email and $99 for plan+domain).
I think what happened here was that your G Suite upgrade had a different card linked to it than the domain registration and plan upgrade. So the G Suite successfully auto renewed but the domain did not. Now that the domain has expired and is not working the email is defunct until we get the domain back up.
Would you like me to proceed with the redemption process? This is the quickest way to get your domain back.
Otherwise, you can wait it out and try to register the domain as new again once it clears through redemption. The risk with this approach is that someone else could get to it first, and then you’ll be out of luck and have lost the ownership of the domain.

The domain will take about 90 days to clear redemption if you decide to wait. There isn’t any type of notification sent out as to when the domain will become available again. So, in this scenario you’d want to try and register the domain each day and hope that you get to it first.
The second option, is to work directly with our domain partner. To retrieve a domain from redemption they charge $80 fee, which is in addition to your annual registration of $26 that goes to us. This is entire process only takes 2-3 days and I will get started right away – as soon as you confirm that you’ll agree to the $80 fee.
