No widgets on homepage with Dara theme

with the Dara theme there don’t seem to be widgets on the homepage, but they are there on every other page. Is there a way to fix this/work around this

I’m seeing a sidebar widget on the homepage, which looks the same as on the other pages.
What widgets in particular seem to be missing?
