No WordPress Contact Info?

WordPress is one of the only sites I’ve come across that has no contact info. No corporate hq address, no phone #…. what do you do when you absolutely have to speak to someone in person?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

what do you do when you absolutely have to speak to someone in person?

I’ve been here for 8 years and I predate almost every support staff member even being on Staff, yet I have never needed to speak to a Staff member in person.

Speak up here please as there is no phone support. Only those with the Business Upgrade have live chat support.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/live-chat/

This is a peer support forum where Staff and Volunteers work together cooperatively to provide WordPress.com support. Emailing support means it takes longer to get an answer than posting to the support forums does.

Volunteers answer the majority of all support questions and when we cannot provide support we tag threads for Staff assistance.

We are happy to answer your WordPress.COM questions right here in this thread. Please simply post exactly what you need help with into this thread, knowing there’s rarely ever a question posted here that has not already been asked and answered.

    Here are your support options:

Note that posting to this forum is by far quicker than any other method of getting support.

Some independent WordPress consultants offer paid phone consulting, me included. It is not cheap, however. If you wish me to fly in so you can speak to me in person, it is even not-cheaper.

    No corporate hq address,

Not true at all – they have a corporate address – it’s on the web site – but they don’t do tech support with the address –

you fail to say why you need to talk with a person –

Hi! Well, I had a site through Godaddy and a wordpress blog. Both have the same content. I thought I would cancel my Godaddy account but then saw they offered a WordPress platform. I paid for it, the domain name, still paying for the first site (it’s a .org site and I wanted .com). This was over two years ago! I am 70 years old and getting less techy as time marches on. I check out the “upgrade to premium” tab on WP, but am hesitant to spend more money until I can get answers that take a while to ask. I THINK the upgrade will do what I want. But I need to know for sure before I Upgrade and then cancel GoDaddy.

This is what I want: I like my WP blog. I know how to use it. I want to transfer it exactly as it is but I want the URL to be http://www.hungadunga.com. Will the upgrade do that for me… transfer my current blog as is… without me having to rebuild it?

    In a word: no.

Our themes here are highly customized for WP.com and you can ONLY use the ones on the dashboard Themes page. But there are over 200 of them and almost all of them are free.

As for your domain name, it will not be http://www.hungadunga.com/ because there is no www in a WP.com domain. It will be http://hungadunga.com/, which is considerably more modern and can be accessed by more people.

GoDaddy told me that by buying the WP platform, the URL would be http://www.hungadunga.com… the WP platform is invisible, working behind the site. Were they lying to me? I already paid for the WP platform.

Find a theme here you like – you can then export your content from your Godaddy site and import it to your blog here – then fine tune the site here (fix widgets in the sidebar etc, maybe a header picture and such)

when it is ready to go you can buy domain mapping and use your old domain name – $ 13.- / year for the mapping – there are several options for email if you have email with your custom domain name –

  • Unknown's avatar

Now we’re getting somewhere. Thanks Auxclass. Do I export it from Godaddy myself or do they have to do it? Can you direct me to a WP upgraded site so I can have an example? Can one view the themes before upgrading? If I am to understand you…. bear with me… never understood mapping… you need that before the site launches and goes public? During this time can I look for a new domain name to use?

  • Unknown's avatar

You do the export – not that tough – this should get you started

The sites linked to both Raincoaster & my name are domain mapped sites.

Dashboard > Appearance >> Themes >> look to your hearts content – there are some filters to help a bit

The site can go public without domain mapping, most of the sites here are not domain mapped –

Transfer the content to a new (or existing) blog here first

You can use your existing domain name here – that helps search engines and all the folks that have your site bookmarked

Godaddy didn’t lie to you; in my experience, they just don’t know what they’re doing. Your URL here will not include www even though if someone types in www it will still go there.

You can look at my blog for an example of one with a custom domain and mapping.

You can view all the themes right on your dashboard Themes page. If you want to know what your blog looks like in that theme, click Preview to see it. If you decide to use a theme, click Activate.

Your site already exists and is public at http://hungadunga.wordpress.com/.

You buy the mapping upgrade whenever you want; my recommendation is the sooner the better, but once you use it, the Godaddy site is dead in the water; it has no domain. So be sure you’re ready to go when you buy the domain mapping.

You can buy a totally different custom domain for your blog if you want, but I don’t know why you would do that.

Went to both your sites. Raincoaster… must be a north westerner. Nice site. Auxclass… love boats, wonderful blog. Actually looks a bit like mine, the way it is organized. The only difference I can see is in the URL. “wordpress” doesn’t come up, though their symbol is evident. How much is the upgrade? All I get for whatever it is is a shortened URL?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, you get to keep ALL the accrued search engine juice that your URL has already gathered. You get to keep your blog subscribers. You get to keep all incoming links. You get to keep your branding.

The domain mapping upgrade is $13 a year. You will need to be sure to renew your domain with the current registrar as often as required, which is a separate cost.

Cheap! Worth it. Will do it. Thanks for all the help!
