Nofollow links – yay or nay (WordPress.com site)
-
Hi, I have a very new blog (> 10 posts) which I update weekly. In my posts, I sometimes have one or two external links to sites like Wikipedia, Britannica etc. I’m just wondering if it’s necessary to put “rel=nofollow” in these links even for reputable sites like these?
Second question: is it even possible to put nofollow links on a WordPress.COM blog? I tried typing it in manually and the end result was that the HTML was removed.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @bamboogroves!
Are we talking about this site: https://theresanother.wordpress.com/ ?
-
Gosh, that’s fast! And yes, that’s the blog.
If it helps, this is the post in question: https://theresanother.wordpress.com/2017/07/30/siege-in-fog-chapter-17-1/
In the footnotes, I resorted to typing out the names of the external sites rather than link to them but it feels rather strange.

Hey bamboogroves,
While adding nofollow ugc is not essential, it’s definitely a good practice.
It’s possible to add a NoFollow checkbox in the Insert Link section on WordPress. However, this is through the use of a plugin which is only available to paid WordPress Business plans (not the free version.)
If you’re interested in exploring that option, here’s a link for more info:

Ah, as I suspected. Okay, no problem, I’ll just put up with it since I’m on the free version.
Thank you for your prompt help, mihaiapetrei and donalirl!
