Non-blog theme?
-
Hi,
I’m new to WordPress and am here due to many recommendations.
I really just want a simple theme which allows me to display a few galleries of photographs, films and graphics work. I’d like the galleries to have a search function, eg. to search for a photo with the tag ‘dog’ or ‘Night’ for example – only photos with those tags would display.
I’m not interested in blogging, or having people see the time and date I update things etc, etc.
Every theme I like the look of has a “You’ve not posted yet…” section which implies I want to write a blog post, but I don’t. I just want a home page (which is preferably one big photo) a clear menu with 4-5 other pages which only contain a gallery,Is there a theme that can do what I want or is WordPress not really for me?
Kind regards
Mike

A blog is a website.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

If you can code then suggest you hire a web host http://wordpressorg/hosting and set up your own wordpress.ORG software install. Then you can design whatever you want to have.
We provide support here only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs. We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page -
Any WordPress site can be set to display a static homepage, instead of your latest posts. In addition to the helpful links Timethief posted above, you might want to take a look at how to set your front page to display a page instead of posts:
In fact, many themes are designed to work with a static front page, including many business and portfolio-type themes.
If you’re looking to highlight your creative work, a photography or portfolio-oriented theme might work well.
There are many available, but you might like to check out Sketch first:

Let me know how it goes! If you’re looking for something specific, I’d be happy to help narrow down the choices furtehr.
