Non existing domain

I just got refunded from my premium WordPress subscription on my website benoit-texier.com because I actually want to do my own site and apply a theme I recently bought. I just created a website with a 1&1 hosting associated with the WordPress app. The problem is that when I now go on my website, benoit-texier.com, it shows that this domain doesn’t exist. I changed the DNS back and it’s still the same.
Does it mean I have to wait a bit or what else can I do to get my site back ?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Now I have this message : SSL_ERROR_INTERNAL_ERROR_ALERT

I guess I just have to wait, but is there something wrong I need to change ?

DNS updates are one of the more finicky aspects of working with websites… Long story short, hang tight for 24-48 hours and the problem will resolve itself. Take a look at this support page from 1&1 if you’d like to learn more about why this is the case.

If it makes you feel better, I just checked benoit-texier.com myself and your site showed up for me! So, the changes you made worked – it’ll just take some time for them to reliably show up for everyone.

Thank you very much for your quick response ! Happy to know my site exists.

I just changed my DNS with the ns*.wordpress.com lines, do I need to change it back to the default 1&1 configuration ?

You are welcome! Happy to help.

Let me see if I have the situation right, as talking domain management and nameservers can get confusing:

    • You bought the benoit-texier.com domain from 1&1, then updated the nameservers on 1&1 to point over to WordPress.com. That’s the part where you changed things over to ns*.wordpress.com.
    • After moving from WordPress.com to self hosted WordPress, you updated benoit-texier.com to point to your new site location. The nameservers in use are still ns*.wordpress.com.

Assuming I have things right, I would recommend switching your nameservers back to 1&1’s default configuration. That way, you won’t need to log into your WordPress.com account to manage your domain in the future.

I’d also recommend writing down what you changed somewhere – since you know the site is showing up the way things are now, you can always go back to the current configuration if something blows up :)

Let me know if I misunderstood, and I can give you better advice!

“you updated benoit-texier.com to point to your new site location”

This part gets me a bit confusing, I don’t really have a different location as the site remains the same from WordPress to self-hosted. But I guess it doesn’t matter that much.

So I just switched back to the default 1&1 configuration and we’ll see if it finally works. I still have this SSL error though, so I wonder if I have to apply this SSL certification offered by 1&1.

I’m posting on this topic as soon as there is an update on the site. Removing the DNS WordPress lines and replacing it with default 1&1 servers still gives me the opportunity to use WordPress on my site, right ?

    That should work!

The line you quoted is my assumption that you updated the DNS settings for benoit-texier.com so that it points to the self-hosted version of the site, instead of the one hosted by WordPress.com.

To get rid of the SSL error on the self-hosted website, you will probably have to install the 1&1 SSL certificate. I haven’t installed an SSL cert on 1&1 before, but this support article makes it seem relatively straightforward.

I hope all of this info helps! I’ll check for updates tomorrow, and see what I can do if you run into any more trouble.

The following message “benoit-texier.wordpress.com doesn’t exist” now shows again. I guess i’m just going to wait until tomorrow for DNS update, and hope that i will able to use benoit-texier.com on WordPress again (but as self-hosted now).

Thank for your infos, it helped a lot ! I’ll give more info once i have an update !

    Yay !

Just installed SSL certificate and everything works fine ! Hope I won’t get any troubles…
